Although Portnoy doesn\u2019t own property in Rhode Island, he voiced concern on Fox Business\u2019 \u201cVarney &amp; Co.,\u201d noting that he has homes nearby and doesn\u2019t want other states to follow suit. \u201cWe don\u2019t like that tax, Stuart,\u201d he said, half-joking. \u201cSo, I don\u2019t like those states getting the ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tax has earned its nickname due to pop star Taylor Swift, who purchased a $17 million mansion in the exclusive Watch Hill neighborhood in 2013. If the law passes, Swift could face an extra $136,000 in taxes annually. She owns several properties across the U.S., including in Beverly Hills, Nashville, and New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Portnoy, who owns luxury homes in Nantucket, Miami, Montauk, and Saratoga Springs, joked that while he\u2019s against the tax, he might accept a Massachusetts version named after him. \u201cIf they name the tax in Massachusetts \u2018the Dave Portnoy tax,\u2019 my ego may let that slide,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the controversy, Portnoy says he\u2019s content with his real estate portfolio for now. \u201cI use my houses quite a bit,\u201d he concluded.
