{"id":1856,"date":"2026-09-29T13:03:46","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T08:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=1856"},"modified":"2026-09-29T13:03:46","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T08:03:46","slug":"openai-shelves-new-ai-model-release-over-safety-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=1856","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI shelves new AI model release over safety concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>OpenAI has scrapped the release of GPT-6.1 Astra, a next-generation AI model planned for an October debut, after \u200binternal testing found the system did not meet the company\u2019s safety \u200cand alignment standards, the ChatGPT maker confirmed on Monday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman and rival Anthropic\u2019s CEO Dario Amodei earlier this month joined <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/what-amodei-altman-musk-have-said-about-ai-risks-stoking-doom-fears-2026-09-21\/\">industry leaders<\/a> in calling for a slower pace \u200bof AI development and stronger safety measures.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI has warned that Astra, its \u200bflagship GPT-6 model, can at times evade human oversight, while the \u2060company and rivals such as <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/anthropics-ipo-prospectus-shows-sweeping-ai-vision-surging-costs-2026-09-28\/\">Anthropic<\/a> have faced scrutiny over experimental AI systems that \u200bbreached safeguards, including an OpenAI model that accessed Australia\u2019s health system database.<\/p>\n<p>The Wall \u200bStreet Journal reported earlier in the day that OpenAI had abandoned plans to launch the model, which was expected to be integrated into ChatGPT and Codex and was designed to handle \u200bmore complex tasks without human assistance.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal reported that GPT-6.1 Astra also \u200bshowed higher levels of deception than its predecessor in internal testing, including instances in which it \u200cdid \u2060not always accurately disclose what actions it had taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile (GPT-6.1 Astra) improved on axes such as model laziness, it didn\u2019t quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorisation, and how it communicates back to the user about \u200bthe type of \u200bwork it\u2019s done,\u201d \u2060said Saachi Jain, head of safety systems at OpenAI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course we want to make sure our model development is safe \u200bno matter whether that\u2019s in the company, or when we \u200bship it \u2060to users.
