Apple\u2019s MagSafe technology, introduced with the iPhone 12, combined wireless charging with a magnetic attachment system that made it easier to align devices and accessories.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The iPhone 12 launched with 5G and brought Apple\u2019s flat-edged industrial design to the iPhone lineup.<\/p>\n

But MagSafe was one of its notable additions, turning what had previously been a simple wireless charging system into a broader platform for accessories, according to a Forbes report.<\/p>\n

Apple had been relatively late to wireless charging. The company announced its AirPower charging mat but never released it, eventually adopting the Qi wireless charging standard, which offered compatibility with a wide range of accessories.<\/p>\n

Wireless charging using Qi still required users to correctly align the induction coils in the phone and charger so that power could be transferred efficiently.<\/p>\n

Apple sought to simplify that process by combining the Qi charging system with a ring of magnets built into the back of the iPhone.<\/p>\n

The magnets automatically aligned the charging coils, eliminating the need for users to repeatedly adjust the phone on the charging pad.<\/p>\n

The system later enabled charging at Qi2\u2019s higher 15-watt rate.<\/p>\n

Apple also incorporated near-field communication (NFC) into the charging system, allowing compatible accessories to be detected when placed near the iPhone and enabling background connectivity between the devices.<\/p>\n

Rather than describing MagSafe simply as a charging system, Apple presented it as a modular platform for accessories.<\/p>\n

The technology initially included proprietary elements that required accessory makers to license parts of the MagSafe system from Apple.<\/p>\n

However, Apple later contributed its magnetic alignment technology to the Wireless Power Consortium for inclusion in the Qi2 standard.<\/p>\n

That move expanded the technology beyond the iPhone and allowed compatible Android phones and other devices to use the same basic magnetic alignment approach.<\/p>\n

Magnetic accessory systems based on the technology have since become common across smartphones and related devices.<\/p>\n

They are used for a range of products, including battery packs, desktop stands, credit card wallets and camera accessories.<\/p>\n

In effect, Apple developed the magnetic alignment system to address a problem with wireless charging on its own devices before contributing the technology to an industry standard that allowed it to be used more broadly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
