{"id":1921,"date":"2026-09-30T13:04:03","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T08:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=1921"},"modified":"2026-09-30T13:04:03","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T08:04:03","slug":"burkina-faso-opens-gold-refinery-in-bid-to-keep-mineral-wealth-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=1921","title":{"rendered":"Burkina Faso opens gold refinery in bid to keep mineral wealth at home"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>Burkina Faso has opened its first gold refinery as the military-led government seeks to process more of the country\u2019s mineral wealth domestically and increase state control over the sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Junta leader Ibrahim Traor\u00e9 said at the inauguration in Ouagadougou on Monday that the facility was part of efforts to end reliance on exporting raw materials for processing abroad and develop the entire value chain locally, according to a BBC report.<\/p>\n<p>The Raffinor-BF refinery cost more than 11 billion CFA francs ($19 million), according to the presidency, and will initially be able to process 164 tonnes of gold a year.<\/p>\n<p>Its capacity could eventually rise to 515 tonnes, allowing it to refine gold from across the region.<\/p>\n<p>Burkina Faso is one of Africa\u2019s major gold producers, with output rising 17% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, according to the World Gold Council.<\/p>\n<p>However, widespread artisanal mining, smuggling and informal trading have made it difficult for authorities to account for all production.<\/p>\n<p>The government has also alleged that illegally traded gold helps finance militant groups that have waged an insurgency across much of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Traor\u00e9, who seized power in a 2022 coup, has pursued greater state control over natural resources and reduced dependence on foreign companies.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign mining firms are now required to give the state a 15% stake in their operations and train local workers.<\/p>\n<p>The refinery is part of a broader push to process commodities domestically, with the government also promoting local industries including cotton, textiles and food processing.<\/p>\n<p>Several other West African countries are pursuing similar policies, including Guinea and Ghana, which have restricted exports of unrefined gold, while Mali is building its first refinery and Ivory Coast plans to open one next year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Burkina Faso has opened its first gold refinery as the military-led government seeks to process more of the country\u2019s mineral wealth domestically and increase state control over the sector.
