{"id":1945,"date":"2026-09-30T21:04:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T16:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=1945"},"modified":"2026-09-30T21:04:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T16:04:00","slug":"ftc-opens-probe-into-ai-giants-including-anthropic-and-openai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=1945","title":{"rendered":"FTC opens probe into AI giants including Anthropic and OpenAI"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>The Federal Trade Commission is conducting an industry-wide probe into Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI \u200blabs to uncover the potential dangers their technology poses \u200cto consumers, a senior FTC official told <em>Reuters<\/em> on Wednesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The probe is the first official US regulatory action delving into rogue AI agents amid a surge \u200bin incidents first reported in July that have stoked fears \u200bthat uncontrolled AI could one day harm humans.<\/p>\n<p>The FTC plans \u2060to issue formal demands for information and compel testimony from \u200bexecutives at top AI developers, including Anthropic, OpenAI and the research \u200bgroup METR, the official said.<\/p>\n<p>FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson suggested last week that developers who instruct agents in cybersecurity tests that result in hacks should be liable for any \u200bharm they cause.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic and OpenAI did not immediately respond to \u200b<em>Reuters<\/em>\u2019 requests for comment. The New York Post first reported the news.<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson had concerns \u200cabout \u2060the companies before AI agents developed by OpenAI hacked the open-source platform Hugging Face, the official said.<\/p>\n<p>But the incident in which OpenAI agents had probed the AI coding hub for vulnerabilities before carrying out a large-scale \u200battack increased urgency \u200baround the issue, \u2060the official said.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump met with top AI executives on Tuesday, where the companies agreed \u200bto establish voluntary standards.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly called fears \u200babout AI \u2060a hoax as he seeks to prioritise US dominance in the technology over regulation.
