Indonesian police have arrested the captain of the ship that capsized last month in the \u200bJava Sea, an incident that killed at least \u200c78 people and triggered a long and difficult search for passengers that is still ongoing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Virgo Transport \u200b8 ferry<\/a> was carrying 243 people when it \u200bcapsized in bad weather in the Java \u2060Sea on September 13 during a voyage \u200bfrom Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in \u200bSouth Kalimantan. Authorities said 108 people survived.<\/p>\n

Divers have been circling the ship, battling<\/a> against fast sea currents and the ship\u2019s unstable structure, to \u200bsearch for those missing on deck.<\/p>\n

Senior national \u200bpolice official Kukuh Prabowo was quoted by state news agency \u200cAntara \u2060on Wednesday as saying that the ship\u2019s captain has been arrested and named a criminal suspect.<\/p>\n

Kukuh said the captain was suspected of violating Indonesia\u2019s shipping \u200blaw by \u200bknowingly sailing \u2060an unseaworthy vessel, an offence punishable by up to 10 years in \u200bprison when it causes deaths and property damage.<\/p>\n

He \u200bdid \u2060not provide any details of the alleged crimes.<\/p>\n
