The Trump administration has told Germany and France to draw down emergency diesel inventories \u200cto help ease soaring global fuel prices or face a potential US diesel export ban, according to three people close to the discussions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The warning marks an escalation in pressure on Europe as US President Donald Trump considers a potential ban to help bring down US fuel prices ahead of November\u2019s midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Europe\u2019s relationship with Washington has soured under \u200bTrump due to tariff disputes and disagreements over military spending.<\/p>\n

For the EU, releasing more stocks would represent a dilemma as it needs to \u200bbalance the need to bring down fuel prices at home with maintaining high stocks for a possible worsening of \u2060the fuel crisis should Trump and Iran not reach a peace deal.<\/p>\n

The EU\u2019s energy task force – made up of the European Commission and the 27 EU \u200bmember countries – will hold a call on Friday morning to discuss the situation, a Commission spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

The Commission, Germany, France, Italy, Britain and Ireland already held \u200ba call on Thursday to discuss the possible need to release diesel stocks, two EU officials told Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The International Energy Agency, the West\u2019s energy watchdog, has not yet asked Germany to release stocks, Germany\u2019s economy ministry said. It was not clear when the IEA might meet next.<\/p>\n

The US administration has been particularly frustrated with France and Germany, which US \u200bofficials believe have not fully followed through on earlier commitments to release emergency oil and petroleum product stocks, Reuters has reported previously.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is in Europe\u2019s \u200bbest interest to work with the United States as we pursue multiple pathways to boost the supply of refined products and lower costs for consumers,\u201d one of the \u200csources, a \u2060US official, told Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A second source, based in a European capital, said that the US has asked the EU to release 120 million barrels of diesel over the next six months.<\/p>\n

Europe has become increasingly dependent on US fuel after banning Russian imports over Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine and after the US-Israeli war against Iran disrupted supplies from the Middle East.<\/p>\n

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright told reporters on Wednesday that the US administration expected announcements from Europe soon \u200bregarding new diesel supplies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve lost some diesel \u200bexports from the Middle East, \u2060although we\u2019re restoring those, and we\u2019ve lost diesel exports from China,\u201d he said. \u201cSo that\u2019s a lot of interruptions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Iran war has disrupted one of the key sources of oil and fuel for the world. Russia has extended its ban on \u200bdiesel exports until the end of October, adding further strain on the market, after Ukraine damaged many of \u200bits refineries. Chinese refiners suspend \u2060October fuel exports to bolster domestic stocks, sources said.<\/p>\n

France\u2019s energy ministry declined to comment.<\/p>\n

An official at the Elysee Palace said that French President Emmanuel Macron and Trump did not discuss the issue when they met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York last week.<\/p>\n
