{"id":2049,"date":"2026-10-02T14:03:45","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T09:03:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2049"},"modified":"2026-10-02T14:03:45","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T09:03:45","slug":"world-food-prices-near-four-year-high-in-september-un-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2049","title":{"rendered":"World food prices near four-year high in September, UN says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>World food prices rose in September to their highest in \u200bnearly four years as logistics disruptions and weather concerns \u200caffected crop markets, the United Nations\u2019 Food and Agriculture Organisation said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fears about a severe <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/el-nio-likely-strengthen-further-persist-into-2027-wmo-says-2026-09-03\/\">El <\/a>Ni\u00f1o weather pattern have pushed international sugar prices to an 18-month \u200bhigh, while a war-related collapse in Black Sea trade pushed \u200bwheat futures to a three-year peak early last month.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2060FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in international \u200bprices for a basket of food commodities, averaged 136.0 points, up \u200bfrom a revised 134.0 for August and the highest reading since November 2022.<\/p>\n<p>FAO\u2019s benchmarks for cereal, sugar and vegetable oil prices all rose last month, \u200bthough meat and dairy quotations fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing a persistent \u200band increasingly broad-based build-up in global commodity prices, as disruptions in the \u200cStrait of Hormuz and the Black Sea combine with climate shocks, putting pressure on energy, transport and key food commodities,\u201d FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf sustained, these pressures will soon pass through \u200bto consumer food \u200bprices, especially in \u2060food- and energy import-dependent countries,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate report, FAO kept its \u200bforecast for global cereal production in 2026 almost \u200bunchanged at \u20602.979 billion metric tons, 2.1% below the previous year\u2019s peak but still the second-largest harvest on record.<\/p>\n<p>FAO cut its forecast for world \u2060cereal \u200btrade in 2026\/27 by 0.7% from September, \u200bciting lower wheat and maize export expectations due largely to constrained Black Sea shipping \u200broutes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World food prices rose in September to their highest in \u200bnearly four years as logistics disruptions and weather concerns \u200caffected crop markets, the United Nations\u2019 Food and Agriculture Organisation said.
