{"id":2076,"date":"2026-10-02T23:03:49","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T18:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2076"},"modified":"2026-10-02T23:03:49","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T18:03:49","slug":"iraq-says-gets-us-exemption-for-iranian-flights-to-and-from-holy-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2076","title":{"rendered":"Iraq says gets US exemption for Iranian flights to and from holy city"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>The United States has granted sanctions exemptions for some Iranian airlines to operate flights to Iraq\u2019s holy city of Najaf, the Iraqi prime minister\u2019s office said on Friday, as Washington targets Iran\u2019s aviation sector to choke its economy in the Middle East war.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It said Baghdad had secured \u201can agreement allowing Iranian airlines, except Mahan Air, to operate 40 flights daily to and from Najaf\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Washington announced sweeping new sanctions targeting Iranian airlines last month as part of its efforts to pressure Tehran\u2019s economy, with the two sides still to make peace in the months-long conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Najaf airport suspended all Iranian flights in cooperation with the sanctions, leaving travellers scrambling for alternative routes.<\/p>\n<p>Several days later, the US granted Iraqi Airways, the national carrier, a waiver to keep its own flights going.<\/p>\n<p>An airport source said the exemption applied to pilgrims, while the transport ministry said the flights would start in October.<\/p>\n<p>In its statement, the Iraqi prime minister\u2019s office welcomed a \u201cpositive response of the US government\u201d and said the new waiver would \u201cfacilitate the movement of pilgrims and travellers, particularly those travelling for medical treatment, religious visits, and tourism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Early this week, enforcement of the US sanctions appeared mixed, with China and Russia defying them while Turkey was allowing Iran Air but not Mahan Air to fly to Istanbul.
