Zhipu AI CEO weighs in"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Artificial\u00a0superintelligence\u00a0may be available by\u00a02030, but its capabilities are only likely to surpass humans in some aspects, the head of one of\u00a0China&#8217;s\u00a0hottest\u00a0AI\u00a0startups said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0AI\u00a0industry is abuzz with speculation about when the technology will overtake human intelligence. OpenAI\u00a0CEO Sam Altman predicted last week that ASI could arrive by the end of the decade, while SoftBank Group\u00a0CEO Masayoshi Son speculated last year it could exist by 2035<\/p>\n<p>Zhang Peng, the CEO of\u00a0Zhipu\u00a0AI, said on Tuesday the concept was too vague to pin down to a specific timeline.<\/p>\n<p>Supass in part, fall short in many\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People reach different conclusions when discussing this issue,&#8221; he said, as the company released its latest large language model, GLM-4.6.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think achieving or exceeding human intelligence levels by\u00a02030\u00a0might mean surpassing humans in one or several aspects, but likely still falling far short in many areas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2019 as a Tsinghua University spinoff,\u00a0Zhipu\u00a0AI\u00a0has emerged as a frontrunner in\u00a0China&#8217;s\u00a0AI\u00a0race and filed documents in April\u00a0indicating plans to list on mainland Chinese markets.<\/p>\n<p>In June, it was singled out\u00a0by OpenAI\u00a0as a fast-rising rival and characterised as an extension of Beijing&#8217;s efforts to push Chinese-developed\u00a0AI\u00a0abroad. Zhang said the company was &#8220;flattered&#8221; but its overseas expansion was &#8220;normal business&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Zhang said overseas revenue had begun gaining traction, but acknowledged the company would not compete directly with US\u00a0models in consumer subscriptions yet.<\/p>\n<p>However, he said\u00a0Zhipu\u00a0AI\u00a0was competing with companies like OpenAI\u00a0in serving enterprise clients.
