{"id":2135,"date":"2026-10-04T13:03:51","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T08:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2135"},"modified":"2026-10-04T13:03:51","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T08:03:51","slug":"openai-safety-employee-quits-says-time-for-trial-and-error-is-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2135","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI safety employee quits, says &#8216;time for trial and error is over&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>A former OpenAI safety employee who recently resigned has criticised the company\u2019s approach to AI safety, arguing that its fast-paced culture and focus on rapid development increase the risk of failures.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Writing in an article titled <em>I Quit OpenAI Because Its Culture Is Broken<\/em>, published by <em>The Atlantic<\/em> on Saturday, David Robinson said AI companies, including OpenAI, were not being \u201cnearly careful enough\u201d and should place greater emphasis on safety expertise and research before developing more capable systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time for trial and error is over,\u201d Robinson wrote, arguing that advanced AI systems require safeguards more akin to those used in industries such as nuclear power and aviation.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson said OpenAI relies heavily on what it calls \u201citerative deployment\u201d, in which systems are released, and safeguards are strengthened when problems emerge.<\/p>\n<p>His comments add to a wider debate within the AI industry over whether companies are moving too quickly to develop increasingly powerful systems.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI and rival Anthropic have faced scrutiny following incidents in which safety controls failed, or experimental systems behaved unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson said he spent three-and-a-half years at OpenAI, where he helped draft the company\u2019s preparedness framework and oversaw safety reports for 12 frontier-model launches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the company sprints from one launch to the next, it is failing to achieve the level of care that I believe is needed,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>An OpenAI spokesperson defended the company\u2019s approach, saying: \u201cWe\u2019re making sure our models don\u2019t become more capable than we can safely manage and secure, and we pause training or hold back models when we need to slow down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson also warned that AI capabilities were advancing faster than researchers\u2019 understanding of alignment, a field focused on ensuring AI systems act in accordance with human goals and values.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former OpenAI safety employee who recently resigned has criticised the company\u2019s approach to AI safety, arguing that its fast-paced culture and focus on rapid development increase the risk of failures.
