{"id":2151,"date":"2026-10-04T20:03:46","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T15:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2151"},"modified":"2026-10-04T20:03:46","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T15:03:46","slug":"yemen-leader-announces-major-military-operations-against-houthis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2151","title":{"rendered":"Yemen leader announces major military operations against Houthis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>The leader of Yemen government announced the beginning of a major military \u200coperation against the Houthis on Sunday, aimed at seizing the territory under their control.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regional and Western officials had previously told <em>Reuters<\/em> that Saudi Arabia and its Yemeni allies were planning to launch an assault on the Houthis, with the Saudis leading aerial combat and Yemeni forces fighting on the \u200bground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, I announce the start of military operations to retake the remaining territory of the republic and extend the \u200bauthority of the state and its institutions across the entire national territory,\u201d Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi \u2060said in a televised address.<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia entered neighbouring Yemen\u2019s civil war in 2015 at the head of an Arab coalition in \u200bsupport of the internationally recognised government, which the Houthis had driven out of the capital Sanaa.<\/p>\n<p>A truce agreed between the warring \u200bparties in 2022 largely held until this year, when the Houthis launched missile and drone attacks on Saudi shipping and oil infrastructure in a spillover from the Iran war.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"houthis-lightning-offensive\" href=\"https:\/\/english.aaj.tv\/news\/330475225\/yemen-leader-announces-major-military-operations-against-houthis#houthis-lightning-offensive\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a>Houthis\u2019 lightning offensive<\/h3>\n<p>Despite the preparations for a counteroffensive, the Houthis have so far maintained the initiative on the ground, weeks after \u200bseizing the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait in a lightning offensive down the coast that saw government forces collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Bab el-Mandeb is the \u200bsouthern exit passage of the Red Sea, a key shipping route between the Mediterranean and Asia that has assumed even more importance this \u200cyear as \u2060an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed by the Iran conflict.<\/p>\n<p>In the last 48 hours, the Houthis have made gains against government and local forces on strategic hilltops near Yemen\u2019s Taiz, military sources said, advancing on the last road between the city and Aden, where the Yemeni government is based.<\/p>\n<p>Houthi control over the Taiz-Aden road would lead to an \u200beffective siege of the city, Yemen\u2019s \u200bthird-largest, inhabited by hundreds \u2060of thousands of civilians and where thousands of government forces are also stationed.<\/p>\n<p>It would also consolidate control of that flat coastal Bab el-Mandeb area by seizing the rugged mountains overlooking them in \u200bthe western Taiz countryside, according to Mohammed Al-Qadhi, a veteran Yemeni journalist from Taiz now working \u200bas a political \u2060analyst.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will help them protect their back in case of any operation against the coastline, and make recapturing those areas much more difficult,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The city is important not just for its strategic location; Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi is from the region, and a \u2060siege of \u200bTaiz would amplify an already-dire humanitarian situation in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Three-in-four families in parts \u200bof Yemen are going hungry from the impact of the surge in fighting, which has displaced tens of thousands of people and disrupted supplies to millions, \u200bthe World Food Programme said last week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The leader of Yemen government announced the beginning of a major military \u200coperation against the Houthis on Sunday, aimed at seizing the territory under their control.
