{"id":2161,"date":"2026-10-05T11:03:54","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T06:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2161"},"modified":"2026-10-05T11:03:54","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T06:03:54","slug":"un-chief-guterres-due-in-pakistan-for-four-day-visit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2161","title":{"rendered":"UN chief Guterres due in Pakistan for four-day visit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres left New York for Islamabad on Sunday night for a four-day trip during which he will discuss Pakistan\u2019s mediatory role in the US conflict with Iran as well as its \u201cconstructive role\u201d in supporting negotiations between the two countries, among other matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the visit \u2014 at the invitation of the Government of Pakistan \u2014 the UN chief will meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar as well as senior government officials.<\/p>\n<p>He will also hold talks with President Asif Ali Zardari.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years, the Secretary-General has seen firsthand how Pakistan has stood by others, having its own people serve under the United Nations flag, and using its diplomacy and mediation to bring parties together when dialogue is most needed,\u201d UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told APP while discussing the UN leader\u2019s visit to Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis spirit is something we have seen time and again over the years, and it is one of Pakistan\u2019s greatest contributions to our shared world,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The secretary-general has consistently praised Pakistan\u2019s intense diplomatic efforts in the Middle East conflict, which led to the Memorandum of Understanding that established a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Guterres is due to step down as the UN secretary-general at the end of this year after serving two five-year terms.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General last visited Pakistan in 2022, when the country\u2019s vast areas were impacted by the devastating monsoon floods.<\/p>\n<p>In his latest trip, the UN chief will visit the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), where he will see firsthand the progress Pakistan has made in strengthening its preparedness and resilience since the floods.<\/p>\n<p>In Islamabad, the Secretary-General will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, otherwise known as UNMOGIP, which monitors the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General is expected to be back in New York on Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres left New York for Islamabad on Sunday night for a four-day trip during which he will discuss Pakistan\u2019s mediatory role in the US conflict with Iran as well as its \u201cconstructive role\u201d in supporting negotiations between the two countries, among other matters.
