{"id":2175,"date":"2026-10-05T16:03:46","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T11:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2175"},"modified":"2026-10-05T16:03:46","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T11:03:46","slug":"spains-pm-calls-early-election-for-november-29-amid-housing-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2175","title":{"rendered":"Spain\u2019s PM calls early election for November 29 amid housing crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday called an early general election for November 29 after parliament rejected two government housing measures amid growing protests over the country\u2019s housing crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at his official residence in Madrid, Sanchez said he would convene his cabinet later on Monday to begin the process of calling the election.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged that his government had made mistakes and failed to achieve all its goals, saying further progress required a stronger parliamentary majority.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement followed Friday\u2019s defeat of two housing decrees introduced in response to protests sparked by the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from her Madrid home.<\/p>\n<p>The Catalan separatist party Junts joined the conservative Popular Party and far-right Vox in voting against both measures, despite negotiations with the government over parts of the proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people took to the streets across Spain over the weekend to demand action on housing, while protesters continued to camp in Madrid\u2019s Puerta del Sol.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez said housing, inequality and public services remained major challenges and urged voters to give his coalition renewed support to continue its reforms.<\/p>\n<p>He framed the election as a choice between continuing progressive reforms and joining what he described as a far-right wave that would roll back rights.<\/p>\n<p>He called for a broader progressive majority and said Spain should remain a model of openness and social justice.<\/p>\n<p>Defending his government\u2019s record, Sanchez pointed to economic growth, job creation, reduced inequality, expanded scholarships and leave entitlements, increased investment in education and healthcare, and industrial modernisation.<\/p>\n<p>He also highlighted the government\u2019s ecological transition and Spain\u2019s international positions, including support for Ukraine, the European Union and the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez described Spain as a \u201cglobal reference point for peace, feminism and prosperity\u201d and urged voters to ensure it remained \u201ca bastion of openness and social justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spain last held a general election in 2023, when Sanchez\u2019s Socialist Party finished second.
