President Donald Trump<\/a> suggested to a crowd of his supporters in Nebraska that \u200bIran could \u201ctake out\u201d a major US city like Los Angeles or San Diego, drawing a swift rebuke from California\u2019s Democratic leaders and some fellow Republicans.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump, speaking at a political \u200crally<\/a> in the state\u2019s farm belt on Monday, discussed American wartime economic sacrifices and said he was determined to \u201csee a tremendous victory, because it verifies all the things we did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd again, remember, with the war, it\u2019s just artificial, it\u2019s a little bit high, it\u2019s a small price to pay,\u201d he told the crowd in Grand Island, Nebraska, apparently referring to rising prices of fuel, fertiliser and other products attributed to energy market disruptions from the war.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a small price to \u200bpay for keeping the world safe, for keeping our country safe. They could take out a city. Let \u2019em take out Los Angeles, let \u2018em take out San Diego. This is a \u200bvery small price to pay, and it\u2019s going to be over with very soon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s essentially almost over with,\u201d Trump went on. \u201cBut it\u2019s going to \u2060end very soon, and it\u2019s going to end one way or the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the White House dismissed criticism of the remark.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe media freakout over President Trump\u2019s comments is not rooted in reality. \u200bHe was clearly stating US cities would have been threatened if a nuclear Iran hadn\u2019t been stopped,\u201d White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung said in a social media post.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica is safer because of \u200bthe President. Iran has no nuclear, no navy, no air force, and no money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has shrugged off cost-of-living concerns stemming from the Iran conflict before, and he previously downplayed his concerns about the potential for Iran or its allies to launch an attack on US soil.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s comments prompted a backlash from California officials.<\/p>\n

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, denounced the Republican president as \u201cderanged and dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald \u200bTrump is now saying our foreign enemies should \u2018take out\u2019 Los Angeles and San Diego,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n

Newsom, who has positioned himself as a major political foil to Trump and is seen as a potential 2028 presidential \u200ccandidate, juxtaposed a \u2060video clip of Trump in Nebraska with mention of the president\u2019s previous rhetoric to justify deploying US military troops to Los Angeles and other cities to fight crime and enforce immigration.<\/p>\n

California\u2019s early voting for the November midterm elections started on Monday.<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s Republican Party has hoped to win more races in the state in recent years, including this year\u2019s gubernatorial election.<\/p>\n

Newsom championed the redrawing of California\u2019s congressional map<\/a> last year to favour Democrats in this year\u2019s election after Trump pushed for conservative-led Texas to redraw its map<\/a> to boost Republicans.<\/p>\n

One of the Republicans running in a competitive race in a redrawn California district near \u200bSan Diego, Jim Desmond, distanced himself from Trump\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI \u200bvehemently disagree with President Trump\u2019s comments. America \u2060must stand up to Iran and defend our interests, but the first responsibility of our Commander in Chief is to protect the American people and our homeland,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo American city is expendable, and no American family should ever be treated as collateral damage.\u201d<\/p>\n

US Representative Kevin Kiley, an independent \u200bwho caucuses with Republicans and is running for re-election in a competitive race in northern California, said in a statement that Trump\u2019s comment was \u201cunhelpful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Los \u200bAngeles Mayor Karen Bass, a \u2060Democrat, said in a statement that Trump\u2019s comment \u201ccould potentially compromise our safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

Appearing on MS Now on Tuesday, Bass disputed Cheung\u2019s assertion that Trump\u2019s comments were being misinterpreted by a \u201cfreaked out\u201d media.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m not sure that he understands that we can hear what the president said,\u201d Bass countered, adding that Cheung\u2019s defence of Trump\u2019s remarks \u201chas no connection to the words that came out of the president\u2019s mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Los Angeles and San Diego rank as the \u2060largest and \u200bsecond-largest cities in California by population.<\/p>\n

More than 115,000 active-duty service members are also stationed in San Diego, including Naval Base \u200bSan Diego, the largest on the US west coast.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy constituents \u2014 including many active duty service members, veterans, and their families \u2014 are not acceptable collateral damage in Trump\u2019s stupid war,\u201d US Representative Sara Jacobs, a Democrat, said in a social media post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
