US soldiers stationed on Japan\u2019s Okinawa have been given a month-long \u200ccurfew and banned from drinking alcohol while they undergo discipline training after a Marine was alleged to have murdered and robbed a local woman.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, is suspected of killing Anna Yagi, 39, in a hotel in Naha, the capital of the southernmost \u200bprefecture, on Saturday and taking her wallet and backpack. Ballard denied the allegations, police said.<\/p>\n

The case is the \u200blatest in a string of incidents stretching back years that have fuelled unease over the large \u2060US troop presence on the island chain near Taiwan and China, with US officials warning it could undermine ties \u200bvital to security in East Asia.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery interaction with our neighbors either builds or undermines the trust that is essential to our \u200bteam. When that trust is damaged, it affects the strength of our alliance and the security of this region,\u201d Lt. Gen. Benjamin Watson said in a statement on Tuesday ordering the measures.<\/p>\n

All US military operations on Okinawa will be paused for 48 hours while troops undergo \u200btraining on standards and discipline, Watson added.<\/p>\n

<\/a>\u2018Brutal and heinous\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called Saturday\u2019s killing \u201cextremely brutal and heinous.\u201d She said she \u200bhad strongly protested to the US and demanded measures to prevent such incidents in the future.<\/p>\n

Yagi died of asphyxiation after Ballard allegedly \u201cpressed on her \u200cneck,\u201d police \u2060told the Stars and Stripes newspaper.<\/p>\n

Hotel staff found the woman unconscious in her room in the early hours of Saturday after she failed to check out. Around 200 officers were involved in a search for the man earlier caught on CCTV entering the hotel with the victim, local media reported.<\/p>\n

In a meeting with Okinawa Governor Genta Koja in Tokyo, Takaichi said \u200bJapan and the US would \u200bcontinue to consult on \u2060effective measures to prevent such incidents from occurring. The incident sparked protests in Naha and Tokyo.<\/p>\n

Japan hosts the largest overseas contingent of US forces globally. Most of the 18,000 Japan-based Marines \u200bare stationed in Okinawa, which the US held from the end of World War \u200bTwo until 1972.<\/p>\n

That \u2060presence has repeatedly stirred resentment among residents over issues such as noise, aircraft crashes and the conduct of personnel.<\/p>\n

The 1995 rape of a 12-year-old Okinawan girl by three US servicemen sparked mass demonstrations.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u2019s killing could complicate Takaichi\u2019s efforts to relocate some Marines \u2060from the \u200bbusy Futenma air base to a more remote facility at Henoko. Opponents \u200bwant the troops moved out of the prefecture.<\/p>\n
