State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement that the money \u201cis not there,\u201d accusing Hezbollah of \u201ctrying to save face with fake stories about cash influxes from Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Treasury spokesperson said Iran was \u201crunning out of money and ways to move money\u201d and that Tehran \u201cdoes not have money to fund its campaign of terror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/what-is-hezbollah-lebanese-group-under-pressure-disarm-2026-06-02\/\">Hezbollah<\/a> received the cash last month despite a tightening US economic <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/blockade-succeeds-where-sanctions-failed-iran-oil-exports-stall-2026-09-01\/\">chokehold<\/a> on Iran and increasing difficulties in getting funds to Tehran\u2019s Lebanese ally, said the people.<\/p>\n<p>Intermediaries \u200bwho moved the money charged a 20% fee, reflecting the risks of dealing with the group, they said. One said this was four times the normal fee.<\/p>\n<p>Asked for comment, a Hezbollah official \u200bsaid an amount had been secured, and a plan for distributing it would be announced in the coming days, without elaborating on the source of the \u2060funds.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian foreign ministry, Iran\u2019s permanent mission in Geneva, and the Lebanese government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s bombardment and invasion of Lebanon uprooted hundreds of thousands of Hezbollah\u2019s supporters after the \u200bgroup entered the regional war in support of Iran on March 2.<\/p>\n<p>But those displaced have so far received little to no assistance from Hezbollah, an armed group founded by Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards in 1982, which has \u200bsuffered heavy Israeli blows in two wars since 2024 and is designated a terrorist group by Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department\u2019s Pigott said Hezbollah had caused misery for Lebanese and had itself been decimated, while its backer Tehran was suffering under a US blockade of oil exports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States will continue to strangle Hezbollah\u2019s finances through sanctions while supporting the ability of Lebanon\u2019s legitimate government to rebuild the South,\u201d Pigott said.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"aiding-50000-families\" href=\"https:\/\/english.aaj.tv\/news\/330475676\/hezbollah-receives-200-million-from-iran-for-displaced-lebanese#aiding-50000-families\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a><strong>Aiding 50,000 Families<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Hezbollah would use the funds to pay an initial $3,000 per family, and \u200bpriority would go to those whose villages have been destroyed or are inaccessible due to Israeli occupation, the sources said.<\/p>\n<p>These number around 50,000 families, one of the sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has maintained financial support to \u200bHezbollah through years of crippling US sanctions: it transferred $1 billion to the group in the first 10 months of 2025, according to the US Treasury Department.<\/p>\n<p>Tehran has never acknowledged financing Hezbollah. Iran\u2019s policy of funding regional proxies has stirred \u200cdomestic protester anger \u2060against the clerical rulers in the past.<\/p>\n<p>It could prove particularly sensitive at a time of <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/iranians-stagger-under-soaring-costs-seven-months-war-2026-09-29\/\">worsening hardship in Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Iran had <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/after-war-losses-hezbollah-seen-gaining-iran-us-deal-2026-06-17\/\">promised Hezbollah<\/a> more funding after Tehran signed an interim deal with Washington in June that allowed Iran to sell its oil, Reuters reported at the time. That agreement collapsed in July.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has since intensified economic pressure on Iran, tightening sanctions and imposing a naval blockade to block Iranian oil exports.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said in a speech last month that the group would soon contribute to a project aimed at housing thousands of people displaced by the war, using \u201cavailable resources and donations\u201d, without elaborating.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah\u2019s ability to fund local services and \u200bprovide post-conflict aid has helped shore up its \u200bsupport in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Following a war with \u2060Israel in 2006, the group immediately handed out large cash payments to those impacted and moved swiftly to help rebuild Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs, a stronghold.<\/p>\n<p>But this time there has been little sign of reconstruction. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said last month that the total reconstruction costs from the two wars since 2024 could \u200bexceed $27 billion.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"a-costly-war\" href=\"https:\/\/english.aaj.tv\/news\/330475676\/hezbollah-receives-200-million-from-iran-for-displaced-lebanese#a-costly-war\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a><strong>A costly war<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The two sources provided no details on how the money got to Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>One of them said it was increasingly difficult for Hezbollah to move funds through financial companies that once processed such transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Such firms based in Iraq and Dubai were no longer an option, and they were also now under pressure in Turkey, this source said.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah\u2019s foes believed money was currently the group\u2019s \u201coxygen\u201d, the source added.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the difficulties securing funding, the group had not stopped paying its fighters and the family members of those killed in combat, this source said.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has razed villages across a swathe of territory it has seized in the south, saying it \u200baims to shield northern Israel from Hezbollah attack.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed more than 4,300 people since March 2, according to Lebanon\u2019s health ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Its toll does not say how many combatants may be among the dead.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah has not disclosed figures on \u200bits war dead.
