{"id":2309,"date":"2026-10-08T11:04:17","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T06:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2309"},"modified":"2026-10-08T11:04:17","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T06:04:17","slug":"us-proposes-70000-fee-for-international-students-work-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2309","title":{"rendered":"US proposes $70,000 fee for international students\u2019 work training"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed that international students pay \u200cat least $70,000 in training fees if they want to work in the country, according to a government notice posted online on Wednesday, part of the Trump administration\u2019s wider crackdown on foreign visa holders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the proposal, nonimmigrant students with F-1 \u200bvisas would be required to pay $70,000 to a certified institution for on-the-job training, known as Optional \u200bPractical Training (OPT), and $30,000 for any additional work training.<\/p>\n<p>DHS said the new rules were \u2060meant \u201cto combat fraud, strengthen the integrity of the immigration system, and protect US workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the OPT system, \u200bforeign students can engage in work training for up to 20 hours per week while school is in \u200bsession, as well as for a limited time after graduation, with an additional allowance for those with degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Those who enroll are currently expected to pay around $500.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDHS is now setting a fee to ensure \u200bemployers, students, and institutions are engaging in appropriate activities consistent with admission as an F-1 nonimmigrant,\u201d the \u200bagency said.<\/p>\n<p>Such training programs often serve as a bridge for students seeking work under H-1B visas, which the Trump \u200cadministration has \u2060also targeted with <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/trump-administration-plans-charge-international-students-70000-work-2026-10-07\/nMT1ALTFWN3V60Z82\">increased fees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/h-1b-visa-what-is-it-who-are-its-beneficiaries-2025-09-22\/\">H-1B program<\/a>me has allowed young engineers and scientists from across the world, especially India and China, to turn years of study at US universities into high-paying jobs and a path to permanent US residency.<\/p>\n<p>Leading US tech companies have come to rely heavily on these workers to \u200bfill skilled positions.<\/p>\n<p>When he was \u200bcampaigning in 2024, President \u2060Donald Trump vowed he would make it easier for foreign students to remain in the country, suggesting they be automatically awarded a Green Card after graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Like \u200bsimilar DHS proposals, the rule change is likely to be met with \u200bswift legal challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis \u2060proposed rule isn\u2019t going to fare well in the courts, just as the 100k H-1B fee and other restrictionist policies have been struck down,\u201d Doug Rand, director of the Talent Mobility Fund, which works to attract \u2060foreign STEM \u200bprofessionals, wrote on LinkedIn on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal is subject to \u200b30 days of public comment before it can be finalised.<\/p>\n<p>DHS said it would wait 60 days after finalisation before putting the rule \u200binto effect to allow schools, students and employers time to prepare.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed that international students pay \u200cat least $70,000 in training fees if they want to work in the country, according to a government notice posted online on Wednesday, part of the Trump administration\u2019s wider crackdown on foreign visa holders.
