{"id":2310,"date":"2026-10-08T11:04:17","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T06:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2310"},"modified":"2026-10-08T11:04:17","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T06:04:17","slug":"russia-kills-32-in-major-missile-and-drone-strikes-across-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2310","title":{"rendered":"Russia kills 32 in major missile and drone strikes across Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>Russia <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/ukraine-russia-war\/\">pounded Ukraine<\/a> with waves of missiles and drones in one of its most \u201cvile strikes\u201d on Wednesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, killing at least 32 people, including children, and damaging industrial \u200bfacilities and energy infrastructure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The heaviest losses were in Pryluky in Ukraine\u2019s northern Chernihiv region, where a Russian missile destroyed a five-storey residential building.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s emergency service said on Telegram that \u200cthe death toll in Pryluky has risen to 22 as of Thursday morning and two more bodies were discovered following a Russian air strike on an apartment building in the capital Kyiv, taking the toll there to four dead.<\/p>\n<p>Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi has earlier put the country-wide death toll at 28, including 20 people who died in the Pryluky attack, including five children.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday evening, prosecutors in Kyiv said falling debris from a drone killed two people in a suburb.<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky said that 100 \u200bpeople had been injured throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>The president noted that the attacks coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the kind of birthday present that Putin gave himself: the killing \u200bof children, the killing of people,\u201d Zelensky said in his nightly video address.<\/p>\n<p>In earlier online comments, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\">Zelensky<\/a> said civilians had also been killed in the capital \u2060, Kyiv, and in the central cities of Oleksandria and Kremenchuk during the massive attack.<\/p>\n<p>In total, Russia fired 70 missiles at Ukraine overnight \u2014 many of them high-velocity ballistic munitions \u2014 and dozens of Shahed attack \u200bdrones, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Russians wanted to strike painfully and demonstratively. This was one of the most vile strikes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Pryluky, an excavator and dozens of rescuers with shovels sifted through rubble at the site where several \u200bsections of the apartment block had collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency workers used ladders to get to the upper floors of what remained of the building, and brought out 15 survivors as they worked their way down through the rubble.<\/p>\n<p>Around 55 people were wounded in the town, regional officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of destruction, especially in the town centre,\u201d said Danylo Savenko, deputy mayor of Pryluky, who said he had run to an air raid shelter with his wife as soon as \u200bhe heard the missiles flying.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"big-jump-reported-drone-interceptions\" href=\"https:\/\/english.aaj.tv\/news\/330475677\/russia-kills-32-in-major-missile-and-drone-strikes-across-ukraine#big-jump-reported-drone-interceptions\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a><strong>Big jump reported drone interceptions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Russia\u2019s defence ministry said its forces had carried out a \u201cmassive strike\u201d on military-industrial facilities in Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions, using high-precision land-, sea- \u200band air-launched weapons, as well as drones.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s air force said it had downed just over 80% of the 46 jet-powered drones launched by Russia \u2014 an increase from recent weeks when air defences took down 50% to 60%.<\/p>\n<p>Since the \u200csummer, Russia \u2060has used increasing numbers of the new high-velocity drones in round-the-clock attacks on Kyiv and other cities, with Ukraine\u2019s air defences struggling to cope.<\/p>\n<p>The air force did not explain the jump in the interception rate and did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky said the Russian ballistic missiles remained the major challenge for Ukraine, adding that he and his team were \u201cevery day looking for Patriot (missile interception) systems that can and must protect people\u2019s lives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine received a new \u20ac1.2 billion ($1.34 billion) tranche from the European Union on Wednesday and will channel the funds towards defence needs, Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi said.<\/p>\n<p>The US-made Patriot system is the \u200bonly weapon in Ukraine\u2019s arsenal capable of stopping \u200bhigh-velocity ballistic missiles. Global supplies have been drained \u2060by <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/iran\/\">the Iran <\/a>war and the Ukraine conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s defence ministry said its targets included sites where Ukrainian defence company Fire Point manufactures and stores its Flamingo cruise missiles and medium- and long-range drones in Kyiv as well as regions of Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava and Kharkiv.<\/p>\n<p>Last week Zelensky said Ukraine had fired \u200bits first domestically made ballistic missile in combat, produced by Fire Point.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/ukraine-will-hit-russian-refineries-response-moscows-new-doctrine-airstrikes-2026-10-03\/\">interview<\/a> with Reuters, he said he expected the company to have \u200ba longer-range FP-9 missile ready \u2060by the autumn.
