{"id":2334,"date":"2026-10-08T16:03:44","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T11:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2334"},"modified":"2026-10-08T16:03:44","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T11:03:44","slug":"british-consulate-in-jerusalem-ends-operations-after-israeli-closure-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2334","title":{"rendered":"British Consulate in Jerusalem ends operations after Israeli closure order"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>The British Consulate General in occupied East Jerusalem formally ended operations on Thursday after an Israeli deadline for its closure expired, with workers removing signs identifying the diplomatic mission, according to an Anadolu report.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The closure followed a 30-day order issued by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar in response to British sanctions targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including a ban on imports of settlement products.<\/p>\n<p>Saar said the measures announced on September 8 had been implemented, including removing British representatives from the international aid coordination centre for Gaza in Kiryat Gat, halting British activities to train Palestinian Authority forces in the occupied West Bank and barring 12 elected British officials and other citizens from entering Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe British Consulate in Jerusalem ceases operations today,\u201d Saar said on X, adding that the consulate\u2019s signage had been removed.<\/p>\n<p>British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, however, said the consulate building itself would remain open and would be known as the UK Mission, Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>Saar said Israel and Britain had held talks over the past week to prevent further deterioration in bilateral relations and reached understandings late Wednesday. Miliband also confirmed the discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Under the understandings, the consul general and 20 diplomats will leave Israel after concluding their assignments, while Britain will retain seven diplomats at the building for a \u201cvery limited\u201d range of activities.<\/p>\n<p>The building remains the property of the British government, Saar said.<\/p>\n<p>The consulate in East Jerusalem\u2019s Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood oversees Britain\u2019s relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank and Gaza and provides consular services.<\/p>\n<p>The closure does not affect the British Embassy in Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The British Consulate General in occupied East Jerusalem formally ended operations on Thursday after an Israeli deadline for its closure expired, with workers removing signs identifying the diplomatic mission, according to an Anadolu report.
