We didn\u2019t have so much time to speak, and all she had time to tell me was \u200bthat she is for the moment in Iceland, where she\u2019s listening to the wind,\u201d said Ingrid Carlberg, \u200bpermanent secretary of the Swedish Academy.<\/p>\n<p>Carson\u2019s work often blends verse, prose, dialogue and translation in \u2060a genre-defying mix. Born in Toronto, she has also held Icelandic citizenship since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>She is widely known for her \u200btranslations of classical Greek literature, which heavily influence her work, which ranges from opera libretti to literary criticism and verse \u200bnovels such as <em>Autobiography of Red<\/em> from 1998.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost all her literary production has centred upon the intersection between the philologist\u2019s obsession with words and the poet\u2019s desire for new meaning,\u201d the Academy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has herself identified the etymology of words as the starting point for all her \u200bwork. Her translations from Classical Greek may be regarded as independent works in their own right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her style is exemplified \u200bin <em>Norma Jeane Baker of Troy<\/em> from 2019, a performance piece which mixes the stories of Helen of Troy in Euripides\u2019 play <em>Helen<\/em> and \u200cMarilyn Monroe.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"among-the-favourites\" href=\"https:\/\/english.aaj.tv\/news\/330475740\/canadian-writer-anne-carson-wins-nobel-prize-in-literature#among-the-favourites\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" title=\"Permalink\"><\/a><strong>Among the favourites<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Carson, 76, had been among the favourites to win this year\u2019s prize, according to bookmakers Ladbrokes, and takes a place beside luminaries such as Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Alice Munro and Ernest Hemingway as a recipient of the award, which often divides opinion among book lovers.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy has been lambasted for ignoring some of the literary titans \u200bof the last 120 years \u200bsuch as Leo Tolstoy, \u2060Virginia Woolf and Jorge Luis Borges, criticised for snubbing US authors \u2013 though it gave the prize to singer-songwriter Bob Dylan in 2016 \u2013 and accused of being too obscure in its \u200bchoices.<\/p>\n<p>Defenders say the Academy has made popular picks, such as Colombia\u2019s Gabriel Garcia Marquez \u200bin 1982 and \u2060Doris Lessing in 2007, arguing that part of its task is to highlight lesser-known literary traditions and encourage readers to broaden their horizons.<\/p>\n<p>Established in the will of Swedish dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel, the prizes for achievements in literature, science and \u2060peace \u200bhave been awarded since 1901.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s prize was won by Hungarian writer <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/krasznahorkai-wins-2025-nobel-prize-literature-2025-10-09\/\">Laszlo \u200bKrasznahorkai<\/a>, dubbed the \u201cmaster of the apocalypse\u201d by American critic Susan Sontag.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature \u201cfor her \u200bbold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms \u200cfor contemporary literature,\u201d the award-giving body said on Thursday.
