US immigration agents shot and wounded a man on Thursday in his car with a child present in \u200bthe Marble Hill neighbourhood of New York City, according to the mayor, city police \u200cand eyewitnesses.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cEarly reports indicate agents surrounded (the man) and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds,\u201d New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The mayor said the child was believed to have been physically \u200bunharmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,\u201d Mamdani said, adding he planned to speak \u200bto President Donald Trump and \u201cdemand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in \u2060our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorise our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Department of \u200bHomeland Security, ICE\u2019s parent agency, said in a statement ICE officers were conducting a \u201ctargeted enforcement operation\u201d in \u200bthe Bronx, New York, to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the criminal illegal alien was injured,\u201d DHS said, adding that ICE officers rendered \u200bimmediate aid. \u201cThe individual is alive and at a local hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shooting occurred at around 4pm, DHS said.<\/p>\n

Working at a restaurant near the shooting, Pedro Almarez said he heard shots fired and went outside \u200cto \u2060see several officers wearing ICE attire at the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were a lot of ICE officers, three or four cars,\u201d Almarez told Reuters by phone, adding the man who was shot appeared to be between 20 and 30 years of age.<\/p>\n

He said NYPD officers arrived about 10 minutes later. He said the \u200bman was only removed \u200bfrom his car after \u2060an ambulance arrived.<\/p>\n

At the shooting scene, where police strung yellow crime-scene tape to cordon off a city block, a woman standing on a balcony overlooking \u200bthe area told officers they were \u201ctaking our children,\u201d according to a Reuters witness.<\/p>\n
