Johnson Rehabilitation Centre, where she has \u200bbeen housed for more than 30 years, said attorneys \u200bStephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services \u2060of Eastern Tennessee, and Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason \u200bfrom the Tennessee Office of the Post Conviction Defender in a \u200bjoint release.<\/p>\n<p>Pike, sentenced to death for a 1995 murder, awoke \u201cangry and confused\u201d in the hospital this week with a long recuperation ahead after surviving \u200bthe attempted execution on September 30, her lawyers said on \u200bWednesday. They previously believed she could be brain-dead.<\/p>\n<p>Pike, 50, had been taken from \u200cthe \u2060execution chamber to a Nashville hospital, unconscious, critically ill and with severe arm injuries after two injections failed to kill her at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.<\/p>\n<p>A Tennessee judge this week <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/christa-pikes-lawyers-demand-see-syringes-drug-residue-botched-execution-2026-10-07\/\">ordered<\/a> \u200bstate officials to \u200bpreserve all \u2060evidence related to their failed attempt to execute her, a development one of <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/christa-pikes-lawyers-demand-see-syringes-drug-residue-botched-execution-2026-10-07\/\">her lawyers<\/a> called the \u201cfirst \u200bof many steps to preserve and enforce her \u200bconstitutional rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee \u2060Governor Bill Lee suspended all executions for the rest of the year while investigators look into the botched execution of \u2060Pike \u200band a similar failure involving Tony Carruthers \u200bin May, when prison officials were unable to set up intravenous lines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Death row inmate Christa Pike was released from a US hospital on Saturday and sent back to prison, where \u200bshe will continue receiving medical care following her botched execution \u200cattempt in Tennessee, her attorneys said.
