US academics Robert Hall and Michael Woodford won the 2026 Nobel economics prize for \u201cmicroeconomic foundations of macroeconomic \u200bstabilisation\u201d, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said on Monday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The prestigious \u200caward, formally known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, is the final prize to be given out this year and is worth 12 million Swedish \u200bcrowns ($1.2 million).<\/p>\n

The two laureates developed new macroeconomic models that improved our ability \u200bto implement effective stabilisation policy, enabling well-timed fiscal and monetary policy measures \u2060that can reduce the intensity of damaging swings in the economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe laureates\u2019 work \u200bhas provided us with a stable theoretical foundation for the models that are now \u200bused by central banks and governments around the world,\u201d John Hassler, Chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith them, we are better equipped to deal \u200bwith shocks in the economy, such as energy crises or sudden changes in how \u200bmuch households consume.\u201d<\/p>\n

The economics prize, first awarded in 1969, is not one of the original five \u200cawards \u2060created in the 1895 will of industrialist and dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel, but was established by Sweden\u2019s central bank.<\/p>\n

The majority of previous laureates have been from the United States. Only three women have ever won, most recently Claudia Goldin in 2023 for \u200bwork on how gender \u200bhas affected pay \u2060and employment over time in the United States.<\/p>\n

Analysis by the Institute for Scientific Information, part of Clarivate, had picked researchers working \u200bon monetary policy, the economics of information technology and evolutionary \u200beconomic theory \u2060as possible recipients.<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s winners<\/a>, Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt, won for work on \u201ccreative destruction\u201d and how new technology and production methods can boost growth and living \u2060standards.<\/p>\n
