{"id":2629,"date":"2026-10-13T16:03:53","date_gmt":"2026-10-13T11:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2629"},"modified":"2026-10-13T16:03:53","modified_gmt":"2026-10-13T11:03:53","slug":"anthropic-warns-small-ai-models-could-self-replicate-across-iot-devices-by-year-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2629","title":{"rendered":"Anthropic warns small AI models could self-replicate across IoT devices by year-end"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>Anthropic said on Monday its experiments suggested small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to \u200bself-replicate on commercial internet-of-things (IoT) devices, such as smart \u200covens and off-brand Android TV boxes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In its experiments, Anthropic looked at whether AI models could find vulnerable devices, copy themselves into those devices, \u200band continue spreading without human help.<\/p>\n<p>It found that small \u200bmodels under 30 billion parameters could complete the many \u2060steps needed for replication.<\/p>\n<p>However, the firm found that such AI \u200bmodels also struggled to complete the entire sequence from start \u200bto finish.<\/p>\n<p>In its simplified tests, where some security steps were removed, Anthropic found that GLM-5.2 and stronger models were capable of end-to-end replication.<\/p>\n<p>Replicating models \u200bwould be hard to shut down as there is no \u200bcentral switch-off point and, unlike non-AI malware, they could also figure out \u200cunfamiliar \u2060devices on their own, targeting data centre processors, Anthropic warned.<\/p>\n<p>The firm focused on IoT devices like Android TVs, smart appliances, and other internet-connected gadgets in its research as these are typically \u200bpoorly secured.<\/p>\n<p>The AI \u200bmajor also \u2060warned that if small models improved at their historical rate, they would be able to \u200bautonomously replicate by the end of this year, \u200bwith small \u2060weight-based replicators following suit soon after.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic also said such autonomous AI systems were likely to replicate slowly and rely on widely \u2060available, \u200brelatively insecure computing resources.
