An Indian court ordered that two leaders \u200cof the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) be detained in jail for five days, the party said on Wednesday, a day after they scaled barricades to enter a historic site popular for protests and chanted slogans demanding the election chief\u2019s resignation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The detentions risk triggering fresh \u200bprotests by youth supporters at a time when opposition groups and student bodies are holding almost daily \u200bdemonstrations to demand commissioner Gyanesh Kumar\u2019s<\/a> resignation over voter list revisions<\/a> that critics say favour Prime Minister \u2060Narendra Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).<\/p>\n

The Election Commission has denied favouring any party and said wrongly deleted voters can re-enrol, \u200bwhile the BJP has accused rivals of trying to undermine democracy by wrongly questioning legitimate electoral processes.<\/p>\n

CJP leaders Ashutosh \u200bRanka and Saurav Das were among about a dozen people who jumped barricades <\/a>on Tuesday to enter the grounds of the Jantar Mantar open-air observatory in Delhi\u2019s central business district.<\/p>\n

Police said this week that the site \u2013 previously designated for demonstrations \u2013 was no longer an official \u200bprotest venue.<\/p>\n

Das and Ranka were sent to prison on grounds including violation of a bond which had secured their \u200brelease from an earlier detention on the weekend, their lawyer Abhisht Hela told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cDelhi Police said they had violated their bond, \u200cand that \u2060they could do this again\u2026that what they have done is a violation of law,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Will not be frightened, CJP says<\/strong><\/h3>\n

CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde, who was released on a personal bond, said the party would not be \u201cfrightened\u201d by its leaders\u2019 imprisonment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will put an end to this dictatorial government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Delhi Police did not respond to a request \u200bfor comment.<\/p>\n

The \u2018cockroach\u2019 movement has mobilised \u200bprotests in recent months \u2060against issues ranging from government school infrastructure to jobs and is among Modi and his BJP\u2019s biggest political challenges in his 12 years in power.<\/p>\n

A weeks-long sit-in <\/a>by its supporters at \u200bJantar Mantar earlier this year forced Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan\u2019s resignation over exam \u200bpaper leaks.<\/p>\n

The recent \u2060demonstrations erupted after the Indian Express newspaper reported that Kumar\u2019s two deputies raised several concerns internally about the changes, registration procedures and digital systems.<\/p>\n

The revisions, which started last year, removed over 130 million names \u2013 more than the population of Japan \u2013 \u2060from voter \u200blists, including 28 million who died, 63 million who relocated, and 30 \u200bmillion who could not be traced.<\/p>\n

Opposition parties allege the deletions disproportionately affect Muslims and other minorities, who are unlikely to support the Hindu \u200bnationalist ruling party \u2014 allegations the poll panel and BJP reject.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
