Oil prices edged higher on Wednesday after an attack<\/a> on the headquarters of Saudi Arabia\u2019s state-owned oil company, while \u200cIranian officials told Reuters they were deploying new tactics<\/a> to target ships, seeking to keep oil prices high and influence the US midterm elections.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brent crude futures were up 14 cents to $105.83 a barrel at 0938 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude was up 57 cents to $94.71.<\/p>\n

Both contracts had climbed more \u200bthan $1 in early trade, with WTI hitting a more than two-week high at $95.41 a barrel.<\/p>\n

\u201cAttacks on ships crossing the \u200bStrait of Hormuz and military strikes between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis are supporting prices as market \u2060participants remain concerned about lower oil exports from the region,\u201d said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo, adding that exports have held up \u200bso far.<\/p>\n

Iranian officials declined to provide details of the new strategy to target ships, but one said that Iran had started to \u200buse different offensive tactics about 10 days ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat Iranian officials are openly admitting to undermining US efforts to keep oil prices under control speaks volumes about the real intentions behind the so-called \u2018peace talks\u2019,\u201d said Priyanka Sachdeva, head of market insights at Phillip Nova.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Attacks on multiple fronts<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Iran-allied Houthis attacked \u200ban administrative building belonging to state-owned oil company Saudi Aramco in the city of Dhahran, causing a limited fire, Saudi Arabia\u2019s energy \u200bministry said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The group has fired ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia over the past week in retaliation for the kingdom\u2019s support of Yemeni government forces. Riyadh\u2019s international airport<\/a> has been hit four times, with a strike on Saturday killing 13 people.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a container ship sank in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz after hitting a naval mine and catching fire, Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards Navy said in a statement shared by state media on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

This comes a day after the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said a container ship and \u200ba tanker were hit by unknown \u200bprojectiles within the strait.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2060expectation that increased Russian diesel exports will ease market tightness is likely to limit sharp price movement in either direction,\u201d said Hiroyuki Kikukawa, chief strategist at Nissan Securities Investment.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump<\/a> announced last \u200bFriday that Russia had agreed to supply diesel to global markets, and his administration temporarily \u200blifted US sanctions on \u2060Russian fuel designed to deprive Moscow of revenue for its war in Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s crude oil production increased by 65,000 barrels per day in September to 8.43 million bpd but remained 870,000 bpd down year on year, the International Energy Agency said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The IEA also said that \u2060a lack \u200bof operational Russian refinery capacity meant that the recently announced easing of Russian \u200bdiesel export restrictions was unlikely to bring any material change to the global gasoil market balance.<\/p>\n
