{"id":27191,"date":"2025-11-12T18:04:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T18:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=27191"},"modified":"2025-11-12T18:04:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T18:04:14","slug":"opposition-to-launch-nationwide-protest-to-restore-judiciary-powers-after-27th-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=27191","title":{"rendered":"Opposition to launch nationwide protest to restore judiciary powers after 27th Amendment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The opposition alliance announced a nationwide political movement from Friday against the 27th Constitutional Amendment, vowing to restore the powers of the judiciary and the office of the chief justice that they claim have been curtailed by the amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to media after the National Assembly passed the amendment, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said the new legislation has defanged the judiciary and undermined the independence of the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe office of the chief justice has been abolished \u2014 we will restore it,\u201d Barrister Gohar declared. \u201cWe will restore the dignity and powers of the judiciary,\u201d he added, arguing that while judicial reforms may be necessary, the government\u2019s current approach toward the judges was \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PTI chairman maintained that his party had raised objections during the parliamentary session, warning that the amendment was contrary to the spirit of the Constitution. \u201cWe pointed out in the assembly that the office of the chief justice has been abolished,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flanked by Barrister Gohar, Mahmood Khan Achakzai announced that the opposition\u2019s protest campaign would begin from Friday. He stressed\u00a0that the movement would remain peaceful and that its aim was to restore the people\u2019s mandate, which he said had been \u201cstolen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read More: After Senate, 27th Amendment Bill sails through National Assembly with two-thirds majority<\/p>\n<p>Achakzai said the campaign would combine domestic demonstrations with diplomatic outreach. \u201cWe will protest and we will not even throw a stone,\u201d he vowed. \u201cWe will also write to foreign envoys, urging them to reconsider or rescind any agreements made with the current government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the country\u2019s worsening economic situation, Achakzai cited a United Nations report claiming that 45 per cent of Pakistan\u2019s population lives below the poverty line. \u201cThis government has failed to address the economic crisis,\u201d he said, questioning the timing of the parliamentary proceedings. \u201cWould the sky fall if they postponed the session today?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>He further alleged that \u201cpowerful external actors\u201d were attempting to destabilise Pakistan and push it toward conflict. \u201cThe world\u2019s dangerous countries want to make us fight,\u201d he warned. \u201cWe must stop the path to war.\u201d Achakzai underscored that the Constitution must remain supreme and that parliament should serve as the ultimate source of power in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition leader also reaffirmed his stance on provincial autonomy, insisting that a province should have the first right over its natural resources. He said the alliance was ready for dialogue with the government but that any negotiations would center on the restoration of the opposition\u2019s mandate.<\/p>\n<p>Turning his attention to the judiciary, Achakzai appealed to the judges to intervene and resolve the crisis \u201cwith a single stroke of a pen.\u201d He warned the authorities that the opposition would continue to increase pressure if their demands were ignored.<\/p>\n<p>Concluding his remarks, he reiterated that the protests would remain peaceful, combining domestic mobilisation with international advocacy. \u201cWe are ready for talks, but our stance is clear \u2014 the Constitution must prevail, and the people\u2019s mandate must be respected,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The opposition alliance announced a nationwide political movement from Friday against the 27th Constitutional Amendment, vowing to restore the powers of the judiciary and the office of the chief justice that they claim have been curtailed by the amendment.
