Security was stepped up, and police warned of traffic disruptions in \u200cthe Indian capital, Delhi, on Friday as the \u2018cockroach\u2019 movement called for a rally in the central business district, its latest in a series of protests demanding the resignation of India\u2019s election chief.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The youth-led \u2018Cockroach Janta Party\u2019, opposition groups, \u200band student organisations have held almost daily protests this month demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh \u200bKumar\u2019s<\/a> resignation over a revision of voter lists<\/a> that critics say favours Prime Minister \u2060Narendra Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party.<\/p>\n

More than 130 million voters were deleted during the revision but \u200bthe Election Commission has denied favouring any party and said wrongly deleted voters can re-enrol.<\/p>\n

The \u200bBJP has accused rivals of trying to undermine democracy by wrongly questioning legitimate electoral processes.<\/p>\n

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke called Friday\u2019s flag protest in support of two CJP leaders<\/a> detained and sent to jail this week for five days \u200bfor demonstrating at a protest site in violation of a ban.<\/p>\n

CJP and left-wing student groups have \u200burged supporters to gather at the Central Park in New Delhi\u2019s busy Connaught Place shopping and food district \u200con \u2060Friday evening to wave and hoist the national flag.<\/p>\n

Delhi Police, however, urged people not to join \u201csuch assemblies\u201d, and the civic authority announced late on Thursday that the park itself would be closed for two days \u201cdue to administrative reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n

Police said they can facilitate a group of select people to \u200bcarry the national flag and \u200bsing the national \u2060anthem at a \u201csuitable place\u201d.<\/p>\n

Traders in the area petitioned the Supreme Court to prevent the protest, which they say \u201cwould cause severe loss\u201d, and demanded compensation \u200bfor losses suffered during a similar rally planned over the weekend that \u200bwas foiled \u2060by a security crackdown.<\/p>\n

The cockroach movement has emerged as one of the biggest political challenge<\/a>s faced by Modi and his BJP in his 12 years in power.<\/p>\n

A weeks-long sit-in<\/a> by its supporters earlier this year \u2060forced Education \u200bMinister Dharmendra Pradhan\u2019s resignation over exam paper leaks.<\/p>\n
