Russia has publicly acknowledged a Ukrainian \u200bdrone strike on a major oil refinery this week and broadcast images on \u200cstate media, breaking with its usual practice to highlight an attack that US President Donald Trump has branded a \u201cdisgrace\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ukraine has frequently struck Russian oil refineries in attacks that officials typically describe as hits on \u201cindustrial enterprises\u201d.<\/p>\n

But \u200bthe target of Thursday\u2019s attack in Ryazan was immediately identified by the regional governor as \u200bthe refinery, one of Russia\u2019s largest. For the first time since the start \u2060of the war<\/a>, state TV showed the aftermath of a refinery attack.<\/p>\n

In a brief report, the \u200bRossiya-24 channel showed the Ryazan plant, southeast of Moscow, with a relatively small plume of black \u200bsmoke rising from the site. No fire was visible.<\/p>\n

Russia is keen to play up the incident, which took place four days after Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv that neither side confirmed.<\/p>\n

Ukraine says it paused \u200bsuch attacks for three days in deference to Trump but resumed them because Russia was \u200bcontinuing to pound its thermal power plants and other energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Trump is under pressure to lower fuel prices, with \u200chis \u2060Republicans facing midterm elections<\/a> in less than three weeks. Diesel prices have reached record highs since he launched a war against Iran<\/a> in February, though Trump says it is the Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries that are driving up global prices.<\/p>\n

Trump said at the weekend that such attacks by \u200bKyiv had \u201cdamn well better \u200bstop\u201d. In an interview \u2060broadcast on Thursday, he said Ukraine\u2019s resumption of strikes was a \u201cdisgrace\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last week a deal on Russian diesel exports<\/a> \u200bto US and global markets to bring down prices.<\/p>\n

Ukraine and \u200bits allies \u2060are concerned that Trump, who has tried without success to end the 4-1\/2-year war, is swinging back towards favouring Moscow, plunging relations with Zelenskiy to their lowest point since he berated the Ukrainian leader \u2060in \u200bthe Oval Office in February 2025. He said at the \u200bweekend that Ukraine needed a new president.<\/p>\n
