{"id":2892,"date":"2026-10-18T13:03:44","date_gmt":"2026-10-18T08:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2892"},"modified":"2026-10-18T13:03:44","modified_gmt":"2026-10-18T08:03:44","slug":"fatalities-injuries-reported-in-fire-at-canadian-military-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=2892","title":{"rendered":"Fatalities, injuries reported in fire at Canadian military base"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>People were killed and injured in a serious incident that \u200bresulted in a fire on one of Canada\u2019s busiest \u200cmilitary bases in Alberta, Defence Minister David McGuinty said on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a \u200bresult of an incident\u201d at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, \u200bMcGuinty told reporters in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>He did not say how \u2060many people were killed or injured, or what caused the \u201ctragic\u201d \u200bsituation at the base in the east-central part of the \u200bprovince, about 210 km east of Edmonton.<\/p>\n<p>A major fire was still burning on Saturday evening, he said, adding: \u201cI cannot recall an incident like this \u200bin recent memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian military and the Royal Canadian Mounted \u200bPolice are investigating the incident, McGuinty said.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on \u200csocial \u2060media that the national government was \u201cworking closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CFB Wainwright had 1,310 military and civilian personnel stationed there as of 2021, according to census data.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200btown of Wainwright, \u200bpopulation about \u20606,600, is just north of the base.<\/p>\n<p>The municipality posted on social media that the fire had \u200bcrossed the base fence into the nearby district, \u200bbut \u2060no evacuation orders had been issued.<\/p>\n<p>General Jennie Carignan, the chief of Canada\u2019s Defence Staff, said on social media that the Canadian forces \u2060are \u200bfully engaged with federal, provincial and local \u200bauthorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur priority remains the welfare of our members, their families and their community,\u201d \u200bshe said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People were killed and injured in a serious incident that \u200bresulted in a fire on one of Canada\u2019s busiest \u200cmilitary bases in Alberta, Defence Minister David McGuinty said on Saturday. \u201cI\u2019m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a \u200bresult of an incident\u201d at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, \u200bMcGuinty told reporters in Ottawa.
