Egypt is ready to provide Saudi Arabia with the support it needs to defend \u200bits security and stability, the presidency said on Sunday, as Yemen\u2019s \u200cHouthis intensify their attacks on the world\u2019s largest oil exporter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi requested an urgent parliament session to authorise the military, one of the Arab world\u2019s largest, to \u200bhelp defend Saudi Arabia if the kingdom requested its support.<\/p>\n

A parliamentary \u200bvote had been expected on authorising the request for military support \u2060on Sunday, but discussions were due to continue on Monday, two lawmakers and \u200blocal media reports said.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Houthis ramp up attacks on Saudi Arabia<\/h3>\n

The Houthis have in \u200brecent days attacked Riyadh\u2019s international airport and the state oil giant Saudi Aramco, amid renewed fighting with the Saudi-backed forces of the internationally recognised government following the collapse of a truce.<\/p>\n

\u201cEgypt will \u200bprovide Saudi Arabia with all necessary and possible forms of support to defend \u200bits security and stability, protect its resources, territorial integrity and Islamic holy sites,\u201d the Egyptian \u200cpresidency \u2060said in a statement.<\/p>\n

It followed a meeting of Egypt\u2019s National Defence Council chaired by Sisi and attended by the parliamentary speaker, the prime minister and the army chief.<\/p>\n

Sisi said in a speech on Saturday that Egypt would act in accordance with \u200bguidance from Saudi \u200bKing Salman and \u2060Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who visited Sisi on September 15, after fighting in Yemen reignited.<\/p>\n

Egypt and Saudi Arabia are \u200bclose strategic and economic partners. Saudi Arabia and other \u200boil-rich Gulf \u2060states provided Egypt with billions of dollars in aid, central-bank deposits and investments after the military ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.<\/p>\n

Egypt had previously joined the \u2060Saudi-led \u200bcoalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015 to \u200bsupport the government against the Houthis, but played a limited combat role.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
