Sri Lanka pulled off a historic run chase on Thursday, defeating England by two wickets after chasing down a target of 430 in the final over of the third match of the tri-nation ODI series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The victory marked the second-highest successful run chase in men\u2019s ODI history, as Sri Lanka overcame England\u2019s formidable total of 429-4 in 50 overs.<\/p>\n

England captain Harry Brook smashed a record-breaking double century to put his side in a commanding position after Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Brook powers England to 429<\/h3>\n

England made a steady start through Tom Banton and Ben Duckett, who put on 74 runs for the opening wicket. Banton scored 50 off 51 balls, including nine fours, before falling to Dunith Wellalage.<\/p>\n

Duckett followed after scoring 29, leaving England at 85-2.<\/p>\n

Brook then joined Joe Root and launched a counterattack, sharing a 159-run partnership for the third wicket. Root scored 69 off 66 balls, hitting eight fours, before being dismissed by Asitha Fernando at 244.<\/p>\n

Root also became the first English batter to reach 8,000 runs in ODI cricket.<\/p>\n

Brook continued his assault alongside Will Jacks, becoming the first England batter to score an ODI double century. He reached the milestone in just 114 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history at the time of the innings.<\/p>\n

The England captain finished with 202 off 116 balls, striking 21 fours and 10 sixes.<\/p>\n

Jacks provided a late flourish, smashing an unbeaten 66 off just 30 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.<\/p>\n

England scored 156 runs in the final 10 overs to finish at 429-4, setting a target of 430 for Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

Wellalage was Sri Lanka\u2019s most successful bowler, taking two wickets for 56 runs, while Fernando and Janith Liyanage claimed one wicket each.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Sri Lanka make history<\/h3>\n

Sri Lanka produced a remarkable batting performance to overhaul the target, sealing a two-wicket victory in the final over and recording one of the greatest successful chases in ODI cricket.<\/p>\n

The result revived Sri Lanka\u2019s campaign after they lost their opening match of the tri-series to Pakistan by 37 runs.<\/p>\n

England had also lost their opening fixture against Pakistan, going down by 87 runs.<\/p>\n

Pakistan remain the team to beat in the tournament, having won both of their opening matches.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Team changes and toss<\/h3>\n

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis elected to field after winning the toss, citing the possibility of dew despite his side\u2019s struggles while chasing in their first two matches.<\/p>\n

Dunith Wellalage replaced Sachindu Colombage in Sri Lanka\u2019s playing XI.<\/p>\n

England made two changes, bringing in Liam Dawson and Josh Tongue in place of Sonny Baker and Adil Rashid.<\/p>\n
