Security was stepped \u200cup at malls, foreign embassies and other locations across Jordan on Saturday, the US embassy in Amman said, a day after a deadly assault on a church that authorities described as a \u200bterrorist attack by extremists.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seven people were killed, and 40 were injured when gunmen \u200bopened fire for several minutes in broad daylight during a funeral \u2060at the Greek Orthodox church in Karak governorate, the head of Jordan\u2019s Public Security \u200bDirectorate said.<\/p>\n

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.<\/p>\n

Such attacks are rare in Jordan, although \u200bauthorities in the US-allied kingdom say they have repeatedly foiled plots by Islamist militants in recent years.<\/p>\n

Authorities said they were still searching for the attackers, adding it was too early to determine whether \u200bthey had links to known groups inside or outside Jordan.<\/p>\n

\u201cA massacre, a massacre \u200bin every sense of the word,\u201d said Tarek Ammarin at a hospital where the wounded were being \u200ctreated. \u2060A relative of Ammarin\u2019s was injured in the attack.<\/p>\n

Reuters video footage showed police patrolling on Saturday outside the Hamoud church, about 120 km (75 miles)southwest of the capital Amman.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a result of a terrorist ideology and blind extremism, and we will not \u200ballow society to go \u200bdown this path,\u201d \u2060Prime Minister Jafar Hassan said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

Jordan\u2019s King Abdullah, a US partner in the fight against militant Islamist groups, \u200bvisited Karak hours after the attack and said the perpetrators \u200bwould be \u2060punished \u201cwith an iron fist\u201d.<\/p>\n

Christians make up a minority of Jordan\u2019s population. The country is home to several biblical sites that attract Christian pilgrims from around the world.<\/p>\n
