Gaza\u2019s civil defence agency said an Israeli strike on a residential building in Gaza City killed at least 23 people Wednesday, most of them children or women, as the military said it targeted a \u201csenior Hamas\u201d fighter.<\/p>\n

The strike took place in the Shujaiya neighbourhood of Gaza City, the agency\u2019s spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe death toll from the Shujaiya massacre has risen to 23 martyrs, including eight children and eight women,\u201d he said, adding that more than 60 people were wounded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are still people trapped under the rubble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ayub Salim, a 26-year-old Shujaiya resident, told AFP he witnessed the strike on the four-storey block.<\/p>\n

He said the area was hit with \u201cmultiple missiles\u201d and was \u201covercrowded with tents, displaced people and homes\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cShrapnel flew in all directions,\u201d he said, speaking of \u201ca terrifying and indescribable scene\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cDust and massive destruction filled the entire place, we couldn\u2019t see anything, just the screams and panic of the people\u201d.<\/p>\n

Salim said the dead were \u201ctorn to pieces\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven now, emergency crews are still transporting the dead and the injured. It is truly a horrific massacre,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A crew from the Gaza civil defence agency rushed to the scene, only to find several people trapped under the rubble, a rescuer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis house was home to many people who believed they were safe. It was blown up over their heads,\u201d Ibrahim Abu al-Rish told AFP.<\/p>\n

He added that the strike hit while many children were playing inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe house was directly bombed, and the entire residential area was destroyed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pulled out the remains of women and children. There are still people buried under the rubble.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Bloody massacre\u2019<\/p>\n

When asked by AFP about the strike the military said it \u201cstruck a senior Hamas terrorist who was responsible for planning and executing terrorist attacks\u201d from the area.<\/p>\n

It did not give the target\u2019s name and renewed its claim, denied by Hamas, that the group uses \u201chuman shields\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hamas condemned the strike as one of the \u201cmost heinous acts of genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe terrorist Zionist occupation army has committed a bloody massacre by bombing a densely populated residential area filled with civilians and displaced people,\u201d the group said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese ongoing massacres against our defenceless people \u2013 with full support from the American administration, which is complicit in the aggression \u2013 represent a stain on the conscience of the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israel resumed intense strikes on the Gaza Strip on March 18, ending a two-month ceasefire with Hamas. Efforts to restore the truce have so far failed.<\/p>\n

The health ministry in the Hamas-run territory said on Wednesday that at least 1,482 Palestinians have been killed in the renewed Israeli operations, taking the overall death toll since the start of the war to 50,846.<\/p>\n

Hossam Badran, a member of Hamas\u2019s political bureau, told AFP on Tuesday that it was \u201cnecessary to reach a ceasefire\u201d in Gaza.<\/p>\n

He added that \u201ccommunication with the mediators is still ongoing\u201d but that \u201cso far, there are no new proposals\u201d.<\/p>\n

Badran said Hamas \u201cis open to all ideas that would lead to a ceasefire and stop the genocide enacted against our Palestinian people\u201d.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that new negotiations were in the works aimed at getting more hostages released from captivity in Gaza.<\/p>\n
