A nearly century-old mosque near Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s residence in New Delhi is facing the threat of demolition, prompting its imam and worshippers to pray for its protection.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A video circulating on social media shows Imam Muhammad Haroon breaking down in tears while offering prayers after Friday congregational prayers. Worshippers can be seen joining him in silence as he appeals to Almighty Allah for help, describing the situation as a test of their faith.<\/p>\n

The video also shows men and women praying for the mosque\u2019s survival and the restoration of their dignity.<\/p>\n

According to Indian media reports, the Race Course Mosque is around 100 years old and was notified as a Grade-II heritage structure in 2009.<\/p>\n

The mosque is located within the Race Course Club premises, near Modi\u2019s residence. The club occupies around 53 acres, and authorities have been removing the club\u2019s structures and surrounding shanties following multiple court proceedings.<\/p>\n

The Indian government has cited national security as the basis for taking control of the area. The Land and Development Office (L&DO) has posted a notice declaring the mosque premises government property and warning that any activity there could be treated as encroachment.<\/p>\n

Barriers have been erected around the area and security personnel deployed. Outsiders, including members of the media, have reportedly been denied access.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Imam given six days to vacate premises<\/h3>\n

Imam Haroon said L&DO officials had given him six days to vacate the mosque premises, warning of legal action if the deadline was not met.<\/p>\n

According to the reports, the mosque\u2019s electricity and water supplies were disconnected on October 7.<\/p>\n

On October 15, the Delhi High Court declined to order the restoration of the utilities. The New Delhi Municipal Council told the court that demolition operations were underway in the area, including the removal of shanties, and that the ongoing action posed a risk of harm to the public.<\/p>\n

The council also argued that the L&DO, which is overseeing the demolition and taking control of the land, had not been made a party to the petition.<\/p>\n

The court observed that the Delhi Waqf Board, identified as the original occupant of the premises, had not challenged the disconnection of electricity and water. It also held that Haroon, who was appointed by the Waqf Board, had no independent right over the premises and therefore could not claim that the disconnection violated his fundamental rights.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Owaisi urges government intervention<\/h3>\n

The case has drawn national attention, with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi urging Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to intervene urgently to prevent the proposed demolition.<\/p>\n

According to Indian media reports, Owaisi said the Delhi Waqf Board had been inactive since 2023 and that its chief executive officer could have intervened but had not done so.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Other mosques face demolition action<\/h3>\n

The dispute comes amid reports of demolition or partial removal of mosque structures in several parts of India.<\/p>\n

Indian media have reported such actions in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Shalimar Bagh in New Delhi and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh during September and October.<\/p>\n

Authorities have cited road-widening projects, the removal of encroachments from government land and court orders to justify the operations.<\/p>\n

According to Indian media reports, orders were issued in September for the complete or partial demolition of at least seven mosques in different areas.<\/p>\n
