His body was found the next day at a deserted spot in Gulistan-e-Johar.

Police initially treated the case as a possible suicide. His family rejected that view, suspected murder and demanded a transparent investigation.

After questions were raised about the first post-mortem and the police inquiry, a court allowed exhumation and a second post-mortem on August 6. A dispute over forming the medical board delayed the process, and the exhumation took place on August 8.

The second post-mortem report gave details of the gunshot wound and its path through the body. These were described as inconsistent with the initial suicide theory. A murder charge was then added to the case.

On August 24, the Sindh government set up a judicial commission headed by Sindh High Court Justice Omar Sial. On September 2, the High Court rejected the family’s plea for an independent, multi-agency JIT. It ruled that forming a JIT was the government’s prerogative.

On October 20, the commission submitted a 62-page report. It described the police investigation as a serious failure and found the death to be murder. It recommended forming a JIT and examining possible negligence or tampering with evidence.

The Sindh government on Wednesday notified a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the murder of Karachi businessman Mir Raza Ali, acting on the recommendation of a judicial commission.
