{"id":3520,"date":"2026-10-30T10:03:44","date_gmt":"2026-10-30T05:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=3520"},"modified":"2026-10-30T10:03:44","modified_gmt":"2026-10-30T05:03:44","slug":"us-plans-to-ban-chinese-telecom-firms-from-direct-access-to-us-phone-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=3520","title":{"rendered":"US plans to ban Chinese telecom firms from direct access to US phone numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>The United States plans to soon ban Chinese telecom firms \u200cfrom direct access to US phone numbers on national security grounds \u2014 a measure designed to prevent scam-related robocalls.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The US Federal Communications Commission said on Thursday that it will vote on November 19 on a proposal \u200bto ban China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom and other IP-enabled service providers \u200b, from direct access.<\/p>\n<p>For telecom firms providing Voice over Internet Protocol \u2014 technology that \u2060converts voice into digital data and transmits it over broadband connections \u2014 direct access is a \u200bmuch cheaper option and makes it easier to offer advanced features.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this decision, the FCC will \u200bbe strengthening our first line of defence against bad actors and illegal robocallers,\u201d FCC Chair Brendan Carr said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Embassy did not immediately comment.<\/p>\n<p>The FCC also said on Thursday that it plans \u200bto bar IP-enabled service providers that use equipment from companies on the FCC\u2019s list that \u200bpose national security risks, including Huawei or ZTE.<\/p>\n<p>The agency added that it would ban all Chinese labs from \u200ctesting \u2060US electronics in December 2028 and may also revoke direct number authorisations for Chinese companies that it deems to pose national security risks.<\/p>\n<p>The FCC has previously barred China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom from providing international telecommunications services to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Other measures under consideration include \u200bbarring them from <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/china-unicom-warns-planned-us-crackdown-could-disrupt-global-communications-2026-06-09\/\">connecting to \u200bUS networks<\/a> and from <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/us-considers-new-crackdown-chinese-telecom-companies-fcc-says-2026-04-09\/\">operating \u2060their data <\/a>centres in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns about the potential for spying and other harms to arise from Chinese access to US telecom data \u200band infrastructure have grown in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>In late 2024, Washington said \u200ba Chinese \u2060state-sponsored cyber espionage group known as Salt Typhoon stole consumers\u2019 call records, US call data and infiltrated US telecommunications and telecom infrastructure firms.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI said this year that threats from Salt Typhoon are \u201cstill \u2060very \u200bmuch ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In July, the FCC added California-based Digitalsystem Technology to \u200ba list of companies posing risks to US national security, citing links to Chinese telecom firms and its ownership \u200bby a Chinese national.<\/p>\n<p>China has consistently denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United States plans to soon ban Chinese telecom firms \u200cfrom direct access to US phone numbers on national security grounds \u2014 a measure designed to prevent scam-related robocalls.
