More than 160,000 people across Germany are expected to join demonstrations on \u200bSaturday, organisers say, as a youth-led movement inspired by protests elsewhere in Europe takes to the streets to \u200cdemand better education and lower living costs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The protests follow a wave of Gen Z-led demonstrations across Europe this year.<\/p>\n

In Serbia, student-led activism helped unseat the country\u2019s long-time leader at the ballot box, while protests in France have descended into rioting and looting.<\/p>\n

The German protests, organised by campaign group Gen Z regelt (Gen \u200bZ takes charge), are planned in 34 cities including Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich.<\/p>\n

The group says it opposes compulsory \u200bmilitary service and wants greater investment in education as many young Germans struggle with rising costs.<\/p>\n

German \u2060authorities say they expect Saturday\u2019s demonstrations, which coincide with Halloween festivities, to be largely peaceful but have warned of attempts by \u200bextremist groups to exploit the movement.<\/p>\n

Parts of Germany\u2019s far-left extremist scene and some groups linked to foreign extremist movements have joined \u200befforts to mobilise support, according to the federal interior ministry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all have those images from France in our minds – looting, burning houses, burning police vehicles, and attacks on police officers,\u201d said Roman Poseck, interior minister for the state of Hesse, whose capital is Germany\u2019s financial hub, Frankfurt.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrance must not \u200bbe held up as a model in this regard.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Berlin, some businesses along the luxury Kurfuerstendamm shopping boulevard boarded up windows \u200band planned early closures ahead of the demonstrations amid concerns about possible unrest.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Gen Z takes charge<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For organisers, however, the focus is on what \u200cthey see \u2060as the growing pressure on younger generations in Europe\u2019s largest economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government has offered no response to our concerns other than to continue making cuts and piling further burdens upon us,\u201d said Steve, an 18-year-old due to speak at a rally in Munich, addressing Chancellor Friedrich Merz.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to exercise our fundamental right to assemble until you stop ignoring us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The protests come as \u200bGermany struggles to revive economic growth \u200bwhile facing growing pressure \u2060on pensions and public services as baby boomers retire and the working-age population shrinks.<\/p>\n

But questions have been raised about who is driving the campaign and whether it is genuinely youth-led, given the \u200bbroad mix of political and civil society groups involved.<\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s national school student umbrella organisation, Bundessch\u00fclerkonferenz (BSK), has \u200bdistanced itself from \u2060the initiative and plans to hold a separate day of protest on November 20.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are distancing ourselves from \u2018Gen Z regelt,\u2019 but not from the students themselves, who have legitimate concerns,\u201d said BSK secretary-general Amy Kirchhoff on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Sean Baker, a student at the Technical University \u2060of Berlin, \u200bsaid he would join the protests on Saturday to call attention to the \u200bpoor state of buildings on campus.<\/p>\n
