{"id":3631,"date":"2026-11-01T16:03:47","date_gmt":"2026-11-01T11:03:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=3631"},"modified":"2026-11-01T16:03:47","modified_gmt":"2026-11-01T11:03:47","slug":"five-killed-in-fresh-ethnic-violence-in-indias-manipur-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=3631","title":{"rendered":"Five killed in fresh ethnic violence in India&#8217;s Manipur state"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>Five people were killed in two separate incidents in India\u2019s northeastern state of Manipur, police said on \u200bSunday, as fresh ethnic violence erupted in the conflict-hit region.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three \u200cmen from the Kuki tribal group were killed in an exchange of gunfire between \u201cunidentified armed miscreants\u201d in the state\u2019s Noney district on Saturday, according to a police \u200bstatement.<\/p>\n<p>The bodies of two other men from the same community, \u200bwho had gone missing earlier this week, were recovered in \u2060Kangpokpi district on Sunday morning after security personnel launched a search \u200boperation, a second police statement said.<\/p>\n<p>A top Kuki tribal body blamed Naga \u200bseparatist outfits for the killings, describing them as a \u201cdirect unprovoked assault \u2026 in their homeland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The killings came amid mass protests attended by hundreds of thousands of people in \u200bthe state capital Imphal and other areas, demanding the abrogation of \u200ba ceasefire arrangement between Kuki armed groups and the Indian state.<\/p>\n<p>The predominantly Christian Kuki \u200cand \u2060Naga tribes have a long history of conflict over competing claims to ethnic homelands in the remote northeastern state.<\/p>\n<p>The latest fighting erupted after a Naga man was allegedly assaulted by men from the Kuki community \u200bin February this \u200byear.<\/p>\n<p>The killing \u2060of three Kuki pastors in May, allegedly by Naga armed groups, triggered a series of retaliatory abductions and \u200bkillings by both sides.<\/p>\n<p>The latest Kuki-Naga clashes have added \u200bto <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/three-killed-four-injured-violence-eastern-indian-border-state-2026-10-19\/\">tensions<\/a> in \u2060Manipur, where the Kuki community is also embroiled in a bloody ethnic conflict with the mainly Hindu Meitei community that began in <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/what-sparked-deadly-ethnic-clashes-indias-manipur-2023-05-09\/\">May 2023<\/a> over \u2060economic \u200bbenefits and job quotas.<\/p>\n<p>More than 60,000 people \u200bdisplaced by the conflict, which has claimed more than 300 lives, continue to live in \u200btemporary shelters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five people were killed in two separate incidents in India\u2019s northeastern state of Manipur, police said on \u200bSunday, as fresh ethnic violence erupted in the conflict-hit region.
