A Learjet crashed on Sunday afternoon in a residential area in Palm Beach County, Florida, \u200ckilling all nine people on board, US transportation officials said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The private jet had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Videos on social \u200bmedia showed the jet slamming into the ground next to a road and exploding.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a \u200bbig-time tragedy that happened,\u201d Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said at a press conference near \u2060the crash site in Lake Worth Beach.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you see that video, it\u2019s a jarring thing. It was like \u200ba missile coming down, and a massive explosion, debris going everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Transportation Safety Board said it had \u200blaunched an investigation into the crash, which Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called a \u201chorrific tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

FAA records list the Bombardier-made Learjet 60\u2019s owner as a Delaware corporation.<\/p>\n

Canada-based Bombardier said it would fully support the investigation and cooperate as needed.<\/p>\n

The crash left a \u201cmassive crater\u201d \u200bby the road near the entrance to a mobile home park, Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores \u200bsaid at the news conference. About 600 people were being evacuated from the area and relocated to two shelters in the \u200ccounty, \u2060Flores said.<\/p>\n

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms were occurring in the area at the time, forecaster AccuWeather said in a statement.<\/p>\n

An audio recording from a Miami air traffic control centre posted on LiveATC, a site that broadcasts air traffic control communications, captured the plane\u2019s final moments before the crash in unusual detail.<\/p>\n

At first, someone in the plane\u2019s \u200bcockpit reported to an \u200bair traffic controller that \u2060they were \u201cmanaging the ice\u201d but faced \u201cmoderate\u201d turbulence and were seeking \u201cbetter rides\u201d.<\/p>\n

Less than a minute later, the person said \u201cMayday, mayday,\u201d reporting that the plane was suddenly descending at a \u200brate of 10,000 feet per minute.<\/p>\n

Seconds later, the person said they were declaring \u200ban emergency, \u2060with the rate of descent accelerating to 20,000 feet per minute.<\/p>\n

Less than 20 seconds later, the person said: \u201cWe\u2019re going to crash into the ground\u201d before saying that the descent rate had reached 22,000 feet per minute as the \u2060plane started \u200bbanking.<\/p>\n

About 35 seconds after the initial mayday announcement, the last thing \u200bheard from the cockpit was a rapidly spoken \u201cWe\u2019re out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n
