{"id":36492,"date":"2026-01-17T15:04:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T15:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=36492"},"modified":"2026-01-17T15:04:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T15:04:12","slug":"thousands-join-anti-trump-hands-off-greenland-protests-in-denmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipp-news.com\/?p=36492","title":{"rendered":"Thousands join anti-Trump \u2018Hands off Greenland\u2019 protests in Denmark"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Thousands of people took to the streets of Denmark\u2019s capital on Saturday to protest at United States President Donald Trump\u2019s push to take over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.<\/p>\n<p>The protest followed Trump\u2019s warning on Friday that he \u201cmay put a tariff\u201d on countries that oppose his plans to take over mineral-rich Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>They also coincided with a visit to Copenhagen by a bipartisan delegation from the US Congress that has made clear the opposition of many Americans to the Trump administration\u2019s sabre-rattling.<\/p>\n<p>Waving the flags of Denmark and Greenland, the protesters formed a sea of red and white outside Copenhagen city hall, chanting \u201cKalaallit Nunaat!\u201d \u2014 the vast Arctic island\u2019s name in Greenlandic.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people had said on social media they would take part in marches and rallies organised by Greenlandic associations in Copenhagen, and in Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense and the Greenlandic capital Nuuk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aim is to send a clear and unified message of respect for Greenland\u2019s democracy and fundamental human rights,\u201d Uagut, an association of Greenlanders in Denmark, said on its website.<\/p>\n<p>A sister demonstration was scheduled to happen in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, at 1500 GMT (8pm PKT) to protest the US\u2019 \u201cillegal plans to take control of Greenland\u201d, organisers said. Demonstrators would march to the US consulate carrying Greenlandic flags.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Demand respect\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent events have put Greenland and Greenlanders in both Greenland and Denmark under pressure,\u201d Uagut chairwoman Julie Rademacher said in a statement to AFP, calling for \u201cunity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Read More: Trump threatens tariffs on countries that don&#8217;t back Greenland takeover plan<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen tensions rise and people go into a state of alarm, we risk creating more problems than solutions for ourselves and for each other. We appeal to Greenlanders in both Greenland and Denmark to stand together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstration in Greenland was \u201cto show that we are taking action, that we stand together and that we support our politicians, diplomats and partners\u201d, Kristian Johansen, one of the organisers, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demand respect for our country\u2019s right to self-determination and for us as a people,\u201d added Avijaja Rosing-Olsen, another organiser.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demand respect for international law and international legal principles. This is not only our struggle, [but] it is a struggle that concerns the entire world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the latest poll published in January 2025, 85% of Greenlanders oppose the territory joining the United States. Only 6% were in favour.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018No security threat\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Copenhagen, where the Congressional delegation met top Danish and Greenlandic politicians and business leaders, US Democratic Senator Chris Coons insisted there was no security threat to Greenland to justify the Trump administration\u2019s stance.<\/p>\n<p>He was responding after Trump adviser Stephen Miller claimed on Fox News that Denmark was too small to defend its sovereign Arctic territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no pressing security threats to Greenland, but we share real concern about Arctic security going forward, as the climate changes, as the sea ice retreats, as shipping routes change,\u201d Coons told the press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are legitimate reasons for us to explore ways to invest better in Arctic security broadly, both in the American Arctic and in our Nato partners and allies,\u201d said Coons, who is leading the US delegation.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly criticised Denmark \u2014 a Nato ally \u2014 for, in his view, not doing enough to ensure Greenland\u2019s security.<\/p>\n<p>The US president has pursued that argument, despite strategically located Greenland \u2014 as part of Denmark \u2014 being covered by Nato\u2019s security umbrella.<\/p>\n<p>European Nato members are deploying troops in Greenland for a military exercise designed to show the world, including the US, that they will \u201cdefend [their]\u00a0sovereignty\u201d, French armed forces minister Alice Rufo said this week.<\/p>\n<p>Britain, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden have announced they are sending small numbers of military personnel to prepare for future exercises in the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>The US has been invited to participate in the exercise, Denmark said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of people took to the streets of Denmark\u2019s capital on Saturday to protest at United States President Donald Trump\u2019s push to take over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.
