Swashbuckling all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday after his hopes of a farewell match on home soil \u200bhad been dashed by Australia\u2019s focus on youth in their short-format \u200cselections.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the most talented batters of his generation, Maxwell wowed crowds around the world in 149 one-day internationals, 130 Twenty20 internationals, and seven Test matches.<\/p>\n

He earned the nickname \u201cThe \u200bBig Show\u201d for his rapid scoring and unconventional shot selection, helping \u200bAustralia to 50-over World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2023 as \u2060well as a T20 World Cup win in 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to be \u200bannouncing my retirement from international cricket and domestic games for Victoria in the \u200b50-over and the four-day stuff, red ball completely,\u201d the 38-year-old told The Final Word podcast in an episode released on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s probably a time where I probably need to \u200bspend a little bit more time investing in the body to make \u200bsure I can get through the remaining couple of tournaments I\u2019ve got in my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maxwell, \u200cwho \u2060scored 3,990 runs in ODIs and 2,897 in T20s, last played for Australia against Oman at the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in February.<\/p>\n

Along with India\u2019s Rohit Sharma, he remains one of only two players to score \u200bfive international centuries in \u200bT20 cricket \u2060and he also took 128 wickets for his country in the short formats with his off-spin.<\/p>\n

Maxwell retired from one-day internationals \u200blast year, and his hopes of an international farewell \u200bat his \u2060home ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, against England this month were ended when the squad for the series was announced<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was, I suppose, a small hope \u2060or \u200bdiscussion that I might have been able to \u200bpotentially get a send-off game at the MCG, but I can completely understand the direction they\u2019re \u200bgoing with this squad,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
