Russian forces on Monday bombed a school being used as an aid distribution point in a village in Ukraine\u2019s \u200csoutheastern Zaporizhzhia region, killing 26 people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the country\u2019s emergency services said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The emergency services said two members of a rescue crew and four police officers were among the dead in the village of Komyshuvakha. Five people were being treated in hospital, including two rescue workers.<\/p>\n

Zelenskiy, in his nightly video \u200baddress, said Russian forces<\/a> initially dropped aerial bombs on a school in the village, used as a shelter and for \u200bdistributing humanitarian assistance every Monday.<\/p>\n

There were no classes at the school, he said, as the village, lying \u2060southeast of the region\u2019s main city, also called Zaporizhzhia, was too close to the front line in the 4-1\/2-year-old war.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Russians \u200bstruck first just as people were arriving \u2013 a few aerial bombs,\u201d he said. \u201cThen there was a second strike \u2013 more air bombs, this \u200btime on the shelter. A vile terrorist strike.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zelenskiy said the Russians could not have been unaware that residents remaining in Komyshuvakha gathered each week to pick up humanitarian packages.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Zelenskiy: Missed opportunity for humanitarian steps<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The attack, he said, had shown that Moscow was intent on killing people instead of building \u200bon the past week\u2019s humanitarian mission in the embattled southern city of Oleshky, brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cRussians continue to \u200bdemonstrate, time and again, their hatred of Ukraine and everything that exists here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Russia genuinely wanted de-escalation, there was an opportunity following \u200cthe \u2060situation in Oleshky to continue taking humanitarian steps. We proposed this. But Russia continues to kill people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, citing the attack, urged countries<\/a> to shun Russian participation<\/a> in top-level sport following a ruling by sport\u2019s highest court ordering the country\u2019s reinstatement in major tournaments.<\/p>\n

\u201cRussia deserves condemnation, isolation, and consequences, not a return to international respectability,\u201d Sybiha wrote on X. \u201cIts crimes cannot be separated from its \u200bflag, its national teams, or its \u200battempts to regain international \u2060legitimacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regina Kharchenko, secretary of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, said 27 people were missing in the attack.<\/p>\n

Zaporizhzhia region police said officers and rescue teams were trying to reach residents believed to be trapped under \u200brubble.<\/p>\n

Photographs posted online showed smouldering rubble strewn throughout the area.<\/p>\n

The attack occurred a day after \u200bthe expiry of a \u2060six-day local ceasefire<\/a> arranged to bring aid into Oleshky to the southwest in Kherson region and evacuate residents wishing to leave.<\/p>\n

In Washington, a senior US official told Reuters that the US will bring together delegations<\/a> from Ukraine and Russia in Abu Dhabi on November 10 to 11 \u2060to discuss \u200bmoves toward ending the war, post-war security agreements and de-escalation.<\/p>\n
