The results will determine control of Congress and could limit or strengthen President Donald Trump\u2019s ability to advance his agenda during the second half of his term.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The elections are widely viewed as a referendum on Trump\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers, while Democrats are seeking to regain congressional control.<\/p>\n<p>The House is considered the Democrats\u2019 stronger opportunity. They need a net gain of three seats to secure a majority, with around 40 races regarded as competitive.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate contest is more challenging for Democrats. Republicans hold 53 seats, while Democrats and independents have 47.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats need to gain four seats to reach a 51-seat majority. Republicans can retain control with 50 seats because Vice President JD Vance can cast a tie-breaking vote in a deadlocked chamber.<\/p>\n<p>A Democratic victory in the House would give the party greater power to scrutinise the Trump administration through congressional investigations, hearings and subpoenas.<\/p>\n<p>It could also make it harder for the president to pass legislation and implement his policy agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is not on the ballot, but his presidency is central to the campaign. Republicans are relying on his support to mobilise voters, while Democrats are presenting the elections as an opportunity to challenge his administration and limit its influence.<\/p>\n<p>The contest is also taking place after congressional maps were redrawn in 10 states. The Cook Political Report estimates that Republicans gained a net five seats through the redistricting process, potentially giving them an advantage.<\/p>\n<p>The results could also shape the political landscape ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
