Iran and the United States are far from reaching a deal to end the war, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Tuesday, despite heightened diplomatic efforts<\/a> to prevent a potential return to active conflict after \u200bthe US midterm elections<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The US carried out \u201cdefensive\u201c strikes on Iran\u2019s Qeshm<\/a> island overnight, with a US official saying \u200cthe strikes targeted surface-to-air missiles used against US assets.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Revolutionary Guards said they downed a US MQ-9 drone overnight in the skies over the east of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

\u201cMediators are working hard to narrow gaps between Tehran and Washington,\u201d the senior Iranian official said, after Qatari mediators \u200btravelled to Tehran on Monday night for talks on a version of the draft US-Iran deal that has been \u200bunder negotiation for the past eight days.<\/p>\n

\u201cTehran\u2019s conditions must be met if the US wants Hormuz reopened,\u201d \u2060the Iranian official cautioned, adding that nuclear talks could only start afterwards and that Tehran would not accept Washington\u2019s \u201cexcessive demands\u201d.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Parliament \u200bSpeaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Tuesday that the ball was in the US\u2019 court after Tehran gave a \u201cstrong and rational response\u201d \u200bto Washington.<\/p>\n

The senior Iranian told Reuters Tehran would respond forcefully, in the region and beyond, to US strikes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe enemy seeks to force the Iranian nation into submission through threats and military action, but they are sorely mistaken, Iran will not submit,\u201d Ghalibaf also said on Tuesday, adding that Tehran\u2019s response \u200bto any miscalculation by the US would be unpredictable and disregard geographical constraints.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump raised doubt on Monday about \u200bwhether he would follow through on a threatened resumption of military strikes<\/a> against Iran after the midterm elections on Tuesday, adding that he believed Tehran \u200cwanted to \u2060make a deal as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
