Democrats have held a significant lead in early voting ahead of the US midterm elections, with pre-election turnout higher than in 2022 and a more diverse group of voters casting ballots, according to data tracked by CNN.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Data compiled by CNN, the Associated Press and analytics firm Catalist show that Democratic voters accounted for a larger share of early ballots than Republicans across 25 states.<\/p>\n

Democrats led Republicans by 13 percentage points in early voting, an increase of more than three points compared with the same stage of the 2022 midterm elections, according to Catalist.<\/p>\n

Early voting also increased in 28 states compared with 2022, including Texas, Michigan, South Carolina and North Carolina.<\/p>\n

However, the data does not reveal which candidates voters supported, as ballots remain secret.<\/p>\n

The early electorate was also more diverse than in the previous midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Across 40 states with comparable data, White voters accounted for 71% of early voters, down from around 76% in 2022. The shares of Black and Latino voters each increased by about two percentage points.<\/p>\n

Another notable trend was a shift towards in-person early voting, particularly among Democrats.<\/p>\n

Mail voting appeared to account for a smaller share of ballots in several states, including North Carolina, where early in-person voting rose 36% compared with 2022, while mail voting fell 35%.<\/p>\n

Despite the Democratic advantage in early voting, the figures do not guarantee an election outcome.<\/p>\n
