A Turkish court jailed a former minister and senior member of the ruling AK Party early on Friday in an investigation \u200binto the country\u2019s fund crisis<\/a>, state-run Anadolu Agency and other domestic \u200cmedia said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, who quit the party after stepping down<\/a> in September from her role as deputy chairperson, was accused by an opposition politician of making a \u200blarge profit on shares just before the crisis triggered a \u200bmajor stock market selloff.<\/p>\n

An Istanbul court arrested Kaya, who was \u2060minister of family and social services from 2016 to 2018, on charges \u200bof \u201cviolating the law on capital markets\u201d and \u201cmembership of an organisation established for \u200bthe purpose of committing a crime\u201d, Anadolu said.<\/p>\n

The move followed her questioning by the bureau that investigates money laundering crimes for the Istanbul chief prosecutor\u2019s office, it added.<\/p>\n

Her \u200bhusband, Ilyas Kaya, was released under judicial measures banning travel abroad \u200bin the same investigation.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor accused Kaya of possessing undisclosed information likely to influence \u200cthe price \u2060or value of a capital market instrument.<\/p>\n

The official added that she had contacts with Emre Tezmen<\/a>, a former executive of one of the asset managers at the centre of the turmoil, according to Anadolu.<\/p>\n

In September, a spokesman \u200bof the main \u200bopposition Yeni Party \u2060accused the couple of receiving about 2.17 billion lira ($43.27 million) from sales of investments to the tune of \u200ba combined 163 million lira ($3.25 million), mainly in shares \u200bof shipbuilder \u2060Ozata Denizcilik, made in April this year.<\/p>\n

Ozata Denizcilik shares traded at around 220 lira at the start of April and rose to 4,980 lira on \u2060September \u200b15, before the turmoil in the investment \u200bfund industry.<\/p>\n
