Two top officials at the US Department of \u200bJustice resigned on Friday, accelerating an exodus of senior figures from the department following the midterm elections<\/a>, \u200cin which President Donald Trump\u2019s Republicans lost control of Congress.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The departures of John Eisenberg, who headed the DOJ\u2019s National Security Division, and Jason Reding Qui\u00f1ones<\/a>, who pursued probes into past criminal investigations of Trump, follow the resignation of civil rights unit chief Harmeet Dhillon <\/a>on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The \u200bDOJ is now without leaders for two of its signature initiatives \u2014 relitigating past investigations and targeting higher \u200beducation.<\/p>\n

It is not clear why Qui\u00f1ones or Eisenberg resigned. It is not unusual for \u2060senior US officials to leave the government following a midterm election, especially one that delivers a sharp setback \u200bto the party in power.<\/p>\n

Democrats plan a raft of investigations into Trump\u2019s administration and business dealings.<\/p>\n

As US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Qui\u00f1ones was at the centre of Trump\u2019s attempts to use the Justice Department to investigate his political adversaries.<\/p>\n

His office was tasked with investigating the criminal probes<\/a> of Trump\u2019s handling of classified documents after he left office in \u200b2021 and his campaign\u2019s contacts with Russia in the 2016 election, among other issues.<\/p>\n

The investigation sought to establish that \u200bthe president was the victim of a long-running criminal conspiracy. But no criminal charges have been filed so far as a \u200cdirect result \u2060of the probe, and the prosecutor who had been overseeing it, Joseph DiGenova, resigned<\/a> in September.<\/p>\n

During Qui\u00f1ones\u2019 tenure as Miami\u2019s top federal prosecutor, dozens of prosecutors left the office and some who prosecuted people accused of storming the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, were fired.<\/p>\n

Qui\u00f1ones\u2019 office was at the forefront of the administration\u2019s pressure campaigns against Venezuela \u200band Cuba and brought criminal charges<\/a> \u200bagainst former Cuban President \u2060Raul Castro. Qui\u00f1ones\u2019 office is prosecuting Alex Saab, a Colombian-born businessman close to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom Venezuela deported in May.<\/p>\n

While Eisenberg has kept a relatively low profile, his National Security Division was involved in some of the DOJ\u2019s most controversial actions, including an unusual raid on a Washington Post reporter\u2019s home as part of a leak investigation.<\/p>\n

The division helped bring the first-ever case in a secretive court set up in 1996 to handle alleged \u201calien terrorists,\u201d to deport a lawful permanent resident<\/a> from Afghanistan \u2060who \u200bhad not been charged with any crime.<\/p>\n

The division helped oversee redactions before \u200bthe DOJ released millions of files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which Democrats and some Republicans criticised as overly broad.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
