Malaysia\u2019s king warned on Saturday that any attempt to challenge his order letting former Prime Minister Najib Razak go from jail to house arrest could \u200bamount to defying his decree, a day after authorities delayed Najib\u2019s transfer.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Najib has \u200cbeen in jail since 2022 after being found guilty of corruption and money laundering in a case linked to a multibillion-dollar scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad.<\/a> He has consistently denied wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

He was \u200bdue to be transferred home on Friday, after his party paid a 50-million-ringgit ($12-million) \u200bfine to fulfil a condition of a royal pardon<\/a> issued by King Sultan \u2060Ibrahim in September that would allow him to serve his remaining two years \u200bat home.<\/p>\n

The transfer, however, was suspended after the attorney-general\u2019s office said questions had arisen over \u200bthe legal interpretation of the royal pardon and a court order issued on Friday allowing Najib to leave jail.<\/p>\n

Sultan Ibrahim said on Saturday his pardon order was \u201cclear, explicit and without any ambiguity\u201d, noting that \u200bthe attorney-general and federal territories minister had attended the pardons board meeting at which \u200bthe order was issued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere should therefore be no confusion over its interpretation, nor should there be prolonged \u200cuncertainty \u2060over the implementation of the decision that has been granted,\u201d the king said in a statement issued by the national palace.<\/p>\n

The attorney-general\u2019s chambers did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside office hours.<\/p>\n

The AGC responded, however, to accusations by Najib\u2019s lawyers \u200bof executive overreach, saying \u200bin a statement it \u2060was only seeking legal clarity and had \u201cnever disputed, set aside or intended to suspend the conditional pardon order granted by His \u200bMajesty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe AGC considers that the issue \u2026 should be referred immediately to \u200bthe court \u2060for a clear determination and directions,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

The king, a position held in rotation<\/a> by Malaysia\u2019s nine regional sultans, plays a largely ceremonial role in Malaysia but has the authority to grant \u2060pardons, \u200baccording to discretionary powers under the constitution.<\/p>\n

The monarch and \u200bthe country\u2019s other sultans are held in deep respect by Malaysians.<\/p>\n
